About The Position

The Community Ministries Director provides holistic leadership to community outreach, programing, and ministries in accordance with Salvation Army mission, vision, and values. The director will be responsible for the delivery of services, implementation of various strategies, fundraising efforts and community collaboration and partnership. The incumbent will also be responsible for providing executive administrative support for the management of staff, volunteers, programs, and property within the Community & Family Services department, while upholding and modelling the ethics and values of The Salvation Army. This is a permanent full-time position. Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work will be required. Regular (mostly local) travel is required.

Requirements

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college/University program of 3 academic years in a related field.
  • A minimum of five years of prior related experience, including leadership, people management, and experience in a pastoral role.
  • Minimum of three years in management setting dealing with human resources.
  • Minimum of two years working with contract providers.
  • Minimum of two years working in financial management.
  • Minimum of one year working with youth program service delivery.
  • Volunteer leadership skills – able to lead a volunteer team: give clear instructions and delegate, make informed decisions, ability to problem solve, provide coaching and feedback, support a team environment.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.
  • Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, values.
  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Remains calm in crisis situations.
  • Ability to coach/mentor staff, volunteers and work within that framework.
  • Ability to multi-task and successfully manage multiple projects at one time.
  • Presents themselves in a Christian manner in all dealings with clients, donors, community agencies and contract providers.
  • Computer and technology skills – skilled in Word, Excel, Outlook, and database systems.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated skills/knowledge of Funding/Grant submissions/programs.
  • Strategic thinker: able to see ‘the big picture’, develop effective plans/strategies and evaluate their effectiveness to improve operations and programs and source new ministry opportunities.
  • Effective analytical, problem solving and evaluation skills with an ability to investigate and initiate corrective action to successfully resolve problems, issues and conflict.
  • Competency in making and implementing effective decisions with strong organizational, interpersonal, time management and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Participation in Bridgewater Church as an active member is expected.
  • Valid Driver’s License; personal vehicle and insurance, and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract

Responsibilities

  • Interacts with community partners and resources to provide services to individuals associated with the ministry.
  • Develops, implements, maintains, and evaluates programs relevant to the ministry unit body and community.
  • Engages in ongoing planning to ensure programming reflects client needs as these may evolve in our changing socioeconomic climate.
  • Assesses relevant demographics to identify new, innovative programming needs and formulates/submits proposals for divisional and territorial approvals.
  • Ensures fundraising objectives for the community are consistently met through careful planning, organization, and appropriate networking within the community.
  • Networks with non-Salvation Army government and community social assistance and service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients.
  • Ensures that staff are trained to perform their duties in all program areas and that the programs operate according to their purpose and the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Coordinates with funders for ongoing support of the programs and ensure service delivery.
  • Ensures that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example.
  • Prays with and shares the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with clients, staff and volunteers, endeavoring to assimilate them into the Body of Christ, as appropriate (including linking clients to the church family and church programs where possible).
  • Ensures the efficient processing of contracts, agreements, and other legal documents requiring execution by Governing Council members are forwarded to Divisional Headquarters Business Office for signature and processing.
  • Makes effective recommendations on the hiring, orientation, training, work performance evaluations based on the PEAC model, recognition, discipline, and termination in concert with Territorial standards; submits and acts on incident reports; deals with complaints.
  • Provides visibility for The Salvation Army within the community through public relations, etc.
  • Contributes to the development of policies and procedures for Community Ministries programs in consultation with the Pastors/Corps Officers.
  • Ensures the protection of extremely confidential and sensitive employee, client, and/or program files.
  • Ensures databases are maintained, e.g., employee/volunteer information, contact lists, inventory.
  • Builds a volunteer base of up to 100 for assistance to ensure community partnerships and networks are developed.
  • Ensures the delivery and maximum effectiveness of Christmas Hamper/Kettles program.
  • Recruits and arranges training for individuals who can help with local disaster management, assist with provincial disasters.
  • Be on-call and available to attend disasters as and when required.
  • Creates department budgets and submits to leadership team for approval.
  • Responsible for ensuring programs comply with established budget.
  • Responsible for safekeeping of all donations both financial and material, including the safekeeping of revenue generated through the thrift store.
