About The Position

The Bronx District Attorney’s Office is seeking a well-qualified staff whose diverse backgrounds reflect an ability to serve the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community and pursue a safer Bronx through fair justice. The Early Case Assessment Bureau (ECAB), is responsible for processing all Felony and Misdemeanor arrests issued by the New York City Police Department or other law enforcement agencies in Bronx County. The Legal Case Writer will be responsible for interviewing the arresting police officer, victims, and necessary witnesses to determine if the facts alleged should result in a criminal prosecution by the Bronx District Attorney’s Office. Additionally, the Legal Case Writer will be responsible for obtaining the necessary case documents and initiating the Discovery process prior to the arraignment of cases.

Requirements

  • LL.M. or Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree required.
  • Familiarity with general court procedures, operations, services, and functions.
  • Strong computer literacy, including proficiency in typing and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, colleagues, law enforcement personnel, civilians, Assistant District Attorneys, court personnel, and external agencies.
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage a high-volume caseload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to analyze facts, draft concise case synopses, and prepare legal affidavits accurately and efficiently.
  • Experience engaging with and communicating effectively with witnesses.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, OneDrive, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Flexibility to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, and other schedules as operational needs require.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to develop or implement systems and processes that promote efficiency, organization, and accuracy.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Strong multitasking and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage competing responsibilities and deadlines effectively.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.

  • Ability to remain professional, composed, and exercise sound judgment in high-pressure or fast-paced situations.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews of law enforcement personnel and civilian witnesses, and respond to inquiries regarding case status, procedural matters, and criminal charges.
  • Analyze and assess factual scenarios presented verbally and prepare accurate and legally sufficient affidavits and related legal documents.
  • Obtain, review, and coordinate the collection of necessary documentation and records from the NYPD and other agencies to support case assessment, discovery obligations, and prosecution needs.
  • Coordinate the collection and retrieval of video and digital evidence, including body-worn camera footage and other recordings, and prepare materials for discovery production.
  • Review and edit Desk Appearance Tickets (DATs) for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with office standards and legal requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure timely completion of all case-related assignments, documentation, and deadlines.
  • Work collaboratively with Assistant District Attorneys, law enforcement agencies, court personnel, and internal stakeholders to support case preparation and prosecution efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with office policies, legal standards, and applicable discovery obligations.
  • Assist with additional unit initiatives, projects, and operational needs, and perform other related duties as assigned.
