Community Communications Lead

OpenAI•San Francisco, CA
•$240,000 - $266,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Community Communications Lead sits on OpenAI’s Product & Research Communications team and works closely with the Culture & Community Engagement team to connect OpenAI products with communities and bring community stories to wider audiences. The role shapes narratives, develops earned media opportunities, and amplifies community-driven stories across organic communications channels. The lead contributes to communications strategy from the beginning of campaigns and community programs, bringing ideas to strengthen their stories, cultural relevance, and opportunities for participation while respecting the campaign and creative decision-making responsibilities of Communications and Culture & Community Engagement leaders. They connect individual campaigns, partnerships, and community moments into a broader narrative that evolves over time, and identify when work is ready for a wider press conversation. The role builds relationships with journalists, creators, and cultural voices; surfaces stories from builders, small businesses, students, and other community members; and helps people tell those stories in their own voices. It develops a sustained rhythm of stories across campaigns, programs, and partnerships, connects locally relevant voices and examples with a shared global narrative, and brings community perspectives into product communications planning. The position can be based in San Francisco or New York, with a hybrid schedule of three days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is offered to new employees.

Requirements

  • Experience leading communications for consumer brands, cultural campaigns, creator initiatives, or community programs, with a track record of earning meaningful attention.
  • Strong cultural instincts and relationships beyond technology media, and an understanding of what different audiences care about, whom they trust, and where they get information.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to find a larger story across multiple moments while preserving each moment’s distinctive details.
  • Initiative, a clear point of view, and the ability to improve work through thoughtful collaboration while respecting others’ decision-making responsibilities.
  • Ability to work with community members and creators so their stories feel authentic, reflect their goals, and preserve their voices.
  • Ability to build narratives over months, think beyond announcements, and recognize when there is enough substance for a deeper story.
  • Strong organization and follow-through; ability to manage multiple programs independently and adapt quickly as priorities change.
  • Ability to build trusted relationships across communications, community, marketing, product, and regional teams.
  • Curiosity about AI and how people use it, with a commitment to accurately communicate both its possibilities and limitations.

  • Make participation part of the story by using storytelling to invite people into shared experiences and incorporate community contributions into continuing narratives.
  • Create a sustained rhythm of stories across creator campaigns, community programs, and partnerships, including follow-through on making, contributions, and outcomes.
  • Develop pitches, features, spokesperson opportunities, and channel content that connect individual stories to a larger narrative and are supported by the work and its results.
  • Partner with regional communications teams and territory leads to develop a shared global story with locally relevant voices, cultural angles, and examples.
  • Bring community perspectives and feedback into product communications planning, helping the team understand what resonates, needs explanation, and may generate new stories.
