Justice Project-Community Canvasser
About The Position
The Justice Project is hiring Community Canvassers and Team Leaders in Wayne County, Michigan, to conduct door-to-door voter outreach through November 3, with possible advancement afterward. The team encourages voters to support progressive candidates and make sure they vote in the non-partisan section of the ballot for State Supreme Court Justices. The work offers experience in leadership, communication and advocacy, community outreach and engagement, campaign work, public policy, and social enterprise. Canvassers engage voters, deliver campaign messages, and collect survey responses. Team Leaders also manage and support a small field team, ensure canvassers have needed materials, and assist directors with training and administrative work. The employer emphasizes equity, inclusion, and anti-racism and encourages applicants from underrepresented groups. Employees must be eligible to work in the United States and provide acceptable, unexpired documents for I-9 verification upon hire.
Requirements
- Must be eligible to work in the United States.
- Upon hire, must present original, unexpired documents from the Lists of Acceptable Documents to complete I-9 verification.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to speak with people.
- Ability to stay motivated and work hard to engage as many people as possible.
- Cultural competence and ability to engage respectfully with teammates and the community.
- Passion for progressive politics and fostering democracy.
- Openness to new challenges and interest in building campaign skills.
Nice To Haves
- Prior canvassing experience is preferred but not required.
Responsibilities
- Engage with the public in a friendly and respectful manner.
- Deliver a compelling campaign message and collect complete survey answers from voters.
- Participate in staff training to improve outreach skills.
- Follow the campaign's safety protocols.
- For Team Leaders: manage a small group of canvassers in the field, check in with them periodically, and debrief with them at the end of the day.
- For Team Leaders: ensure each canvasser has the materials needed to be successful.
- For Team Leaders: assist directors with canvasser training and administrative work.
