About The Position

The Communications Supervisor is a leadership role within REMSA Health, focusing on supporting and leading communications staff members. This position is central to the REMSA Health communications center, overseeing resource distribution and statistical reporting. The supervisor acts as the primary point person for the communications team and all communication systems, including CAD, radios, pagers, cell phones, and MDTs. This role requires strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple vendors, sound judgment, prioritization, and resource management. The supervisor is expected to foster an environment of growth, delegate appropriately, and build cooperation between departments and outside agencies. Maintaining strict confidentiality regarding personnel, proprietary, and patient issues is crucial. The supervisor must effectively lead in a crisis, manage multiple problems simultaneously, and ensure team members adhere to complex policies and procedures. Developing external networks and staying current with communication technology trends are also key aspects of this role.

Requirements

  • Current certification as an EMD/EFD with the International Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch.
  • Proof of EMT course completion, or current or inactive EMT certification.
  • At least 2 years full-time experience as an EMD/EFD, ACS and/or SSM in a high-performance EMS system.
  • Demonstrated track record of strong supervisory/leadership skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
  • Attention to detail is mandatory.
  • Ability to exhibit proficiency in all aspects of Emergency Medical Dispatching (EMD), System Status Management (SSM) and Aviation dispatch.
  • Knowledge of system planning (e.g., variable staffing levels, supply and demand, workload assumptions, and local geography) required.
  • Self-starter requiring little oversight.
  • Willing and available to work on an on-call basis as assigned.
  • Flexibility is important.
  • Ability to develop action plans and lead team members by example and interaction.
  • Ability to interact with dynamic supervisory team in program development, problem resolution, and strategic planning/implementation.
  • Thorough knowledge of all REMSA dispatch, Care Flight, and emergency operations policies and procedures must be achieved.
  • Fluency in all dispatch protocols, programs, and system operational requirements required.
  • Computer proficiency in windows, CAD and voice logging.

  • Prior EMS field experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support and lead communications staff members by example, ensuring they treat others with respect and dignity.
  • Oversee the distribution of resources and generation of statistical reports for the communications center.
  • Manage all aspects of REMSA Health’s communications systems, including CAD, radios, repeaters, pagers, cell phones, and MDTs.
  • Assist communications staff in developing procedures to identify, correct, and track problems.
  • Work with multiple vendors, utilizing sound judgment, prioritization skills, and resource management.
  • Lead a team of professional ED / ACS / Care Coordinator / NHL team members with an approachable and open management style.
  • Administer RASI policies, procedures, and protocols effectively.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately and foster an environment of growth and participation within the team.
  • Allow team members at all levels to take on expanded/leadership roles where appropriate.
  • Build and maintain bridges of cooperation between all REMSA departments/divisions and outside agencies.
  • Interact with other REMSA team members as a leader.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding personnel, proprietary, and patient issues.
  • Handle delicate personnel issues effectively, confidentially, and in a timely manner.
  • Clearly communicate REMSA expectations and take swift, timely, and appropriate corrective action when necessary.
  • Ensure all personnel behave in a courteous and professional manner at all times.
  • Ensure the Communications Center delivers services with accuracy, efficiency, and courtesy.
  • Act as the driving force for continuous innovation and improvement through leadership, goal setting, team building, prioritization, and best practices.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate methods for 360-degree feedback loops and customer comments.
  • Monitor the potential need to redistribute resources and prioritize appropriately.
  • Break down complex problems into manageable pieces and meet deadlines.
  • Present projects and reports with unquestionable accuracy, quality, and completeness.
  • Utilize delegation and a team approach for success.
  • Lead effectively in a crisis, managing multiple problems simultaneously.
  • Read, write, and make practical application of complex policies, procedures, regulations, and statutes, and ensure team members do the same.
  • Develop effective methods to coach team members.
  • Develop a network outside of the organization, working with community leaders on committees and special projects.
  • Participate in professional organizations as appropriate.
  • Maintain currency in communications technology and trends.
  • Maintain a good community image.
  • Work with Communications Manager(s) to ensure performance requirements are exceeded.
  • Conduct continuous performance monitoring.
  • Assist other areas of operations as necessary or requested to meet overall organizational goals.
