About The Position

Westbank First Nation (WFN) is a progressive and prosperous self-governing First Nation located within the traditional unceded territory of the syilx people in the Okanagan Valley. The Communications Summer Student will report to the Manager of Communications and will assist the Communications team with various administrative tasks, gaining insight into the functions and responsibilities of the department. This is a term position.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 or in a post-secondary program
  • Educational interest in Communications, Business Administration, or related fields
  • Criminal Record Check with results acceptable to WFN
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and Acceptable Driver’s Abstract
  • Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborative team player with strong judgment skills
  • Comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment
  • Passion for working with people, promoting economic development, and contributing to the success of WFN

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with indigenous communities/people considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative support and assistance to the Communications Department.
  • Assists with Communications projects and initiatives.
  • Provides support to various Communications functions including writing newsletter articles, attending events, taking photos and helping with various event setup as required.
  • Assists in implementing strategic social media campaigns that meet WFN’s objectives and goals.
  • Answers calls, returns voicemails and takes messages for the Department.
  • Collaborates with team members to develop reports, presentations, and communication materials for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards, and procedures and as directed by the Manager of Communications.
