About The Position

Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a Communications Manager for its College of Engineering. This role is responsible for managing all communication activities within the college, including developing and executing communication plans, creating news and feature stories, overseeing content production and distribution, and assessing campaign effectiveness. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications and/or related field.
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated.
  • Successful background check.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all communications activity related to the College of Engineering.
  • Mine, research, develop, and create news and feature stories on Engineering content, pertaining to the college's strategic priorities and current events.
  • Research and gather information for assignments.
  • Conduct research and internal interviews as part of original reporting for print and digital materials.
  • Assess Communication project needs and objectives.
  • Work with senior management to develop and approve comprehensive communication plans.
  • Determine needs, materials, and implementation of communications, including medium for delivery and technical resources.
  • Act as a project manager to oversee work and ensure objectives are met.
  • Develop communication materials or implement communications plans.
  • Establish communication policies or procedures.
  • Outline video needs and messaging for primary story delivery and supporting content.
  • Oversee vendors involved in the production and delivery of communications.
  • May supervise staff.
  • Oversee the graphic design, publication, and distribution of developed content and repurpose it into a variety of formats.
  • Assess effectiveness of campaigns.
  • Solicit feedback from stakeholders and identify areas for improvement.
  • Incorporate improvements into future communications plans.
  • Write a variety of content, including traditional press releases, pitch support documents for the PR team, fact sheets, web content, university magazine stories, and other supporting documents in an easy-to-understand format.
  • Help manage and optimize contributions from faculty and administration.
  • Maintain an active interest in the subject matter of the assigned writing beat.
  • Conceptualize and create stories and visual content formats to turn topics into compelling stories to support communication plans.
