About The Position

The Town of East Gwillimbury is seeking a Communications Assistant for an 18-month contract. This role supports the Communications Officer and works collaboratively with the Communications team and Town departments to foster transparent communications and contribute to the planning, development, and coordination of communications plans. Requirements

  • Completed a university/college or post-graduate program in Communications or Public Relations.
  • 1 to 2 years of related work experience, preferably in a municipal environment.
  • Proficiency with design applications (Adobe Suite).
  • Self-motivated and organized with attention to detail.
  • Strong communicator with experience drafting high-quality communications.
  • Strategic thinker who can conceptualize easily, learn quickly, and initiate new ideas.
  • Experience with social media platforms and digital media trends, with the ability to plan, shoot, and edit engaging visual content.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Teams and Office Suite (Word, Outlook, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and Adobe.
  • Good time management skills with the ability to organize, prioritize and effectively work under tight deadlines and manage projects independently.
  • Ability to deal courteously with Town staff, businesses, public, suppliers, Members of Council and other levels of government.

  • Solid understanding of the role and processes of municipal government is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the Town’s digital communications channels by creating and scheduling website and social media content (Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook), while monitoring trends and producing engaging social media posts and reels.
  • Prepare, distribute and advertise the weekly eNewsletter.
  • Update, maintain and train staff on the Town’s website.
  • Update and schedule internal digital advertising.
  • Assist with developing communications plans, graphics, videos/reels and documents.
  • Issue media releases and advisories and track media coverage.
  • Monitor and respond to resident inquiries via social media.
  • Attend community and Town events to take photos and post live on social media, which may include evenings, weekends and some holidays.
  • Partner with various departments and teams to support communications activities.
