About The Position

The Communications Assistant will support national campaigns and storytelling initiatives at the Canadian Cancer Society, contributing to programs like CIBC Run for the Cure and Relay For Life. This role provides hands-on experience in media relations, content creation, and campaign support, while helping bring impactful stories to life and supporting day-to-day communications operations.

Requirements

  • In process of obtaining a post-secondary degree, diploma or certifications in communications, public relations, journalism or a related field
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, tact and diplomacy
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to write clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings and styles
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Experience working in a team-oriented environment; ability to take direction and collaborate with others

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of MS Office suite and SharePoint (asset)
  • French/Bilingualism (French /English) is an asset due to the organization’s nationwide operations.

Responsibilities

  • Shadow and participate in full onboarding process for new storytellers
  • Use story writing template to highlight people who have benefited from CCS for our in-house storytelling program, including interviewing and writing
  • Coordinating internal story requests and content creation opportunities
  • Support communications efforts for major nationwide programs, events, and virtual experiences such as the CIBC Run for the Cure (35th anniversary), Cops for Cancer, Relay For Life, corporate partnership programs and more with ideation and execution
  • Conduct audits of competitor fundraising communication campaigns
  • Conduct research and collect data that supports key message development
  • Assist with proactive and reactive media relations for fundraising campaigns including developing media lists, drafting and sending pitches, coordinating interviews and shadowing media training
  • Learn how to analyze campaign performance and develop media reports
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings with PR agencies and integrated marketing team
  • Participate in weekly team meetings
  • Ad hoc support for Communications team such as notetaking and resource gathering
  • Data entry and auditing story tags to keep the SharePoint database up to date
  • Media monitoring using Cision
