About The Position

Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff. ASI is considered a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 27,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. ASI is engaged in the work of being a learning organization. Currently, the guiding ideas of the organization are “under construction” as the team re-imagines its vision, mission, and core values. Requirements

  • Six months of leadership or oversight experience required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated creative ability
  • Ability to operate a computer workstation using word processing, spreadsheet and other computer applications in use
  • Desire to learn about marketing, advertising, and corporate communications
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain professional work conduct
  • Ability to make independent decisions and make recommendations
  • Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively and work productively without close supervision
  • Ability to manage time in a deadline-driven environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in journalism and/or public relations preferred
  • Experience with AP Style writing preferred

Responsibilities

  • Writes copy for campaigns, press releases, video scripts, radio ads, flyers, brochures, articles, newsletters, annual reports, external client projects, and other publications
  • Reads, proofs, and edits written communication and pre-press projects to detect errors/style discrepancies
  • Responsible for the day-to-day duties of the Communications Assistants
  • Records and tracks measurable outcomes of the organization’s blog, and email marketing efforts
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving written work prepared by the Communication Assistants
  • Responds to public inquiries on behalf of ASI with guidance from the Communications Manager
  • Responsible for preparing the agenda, taking notes, and facilitating weekly Communications team meetings
  • Assists with the recruitment, onboarding, training, development, scheduling, and time and attendance of the Communications Assistants
  • Assists Communications Manager with various projects
  • Responsible for distributing assignments and managing the projects of the Communication Assistants
  • Reports information provided by ASI departments and the campus community
  • Assists in public relations efforts led by the Communications Manager
  • Ensures that changes/revisions are properly annotated, and that typeset material is correct
  • Performs fact-checking duties
  • Collaborates with various stakeholders on marketing and communication projects
  • Ensures the ASI Writing Style Guide is followed, as needed
  • Assists in compiling local media coverage report and media clips
  • Assists in the development and administration of the campaign strategy
  • Provides administrative support
