About The Position

First American is seeking a Commercial Underwriting Counsel to support commercial real estate transactions. The role applies legal expertise and risk analysis to help employees and customers assess title insurance issues and find solutions. It provides underwriting support, counsel, and authorization concerning the issuance of real estate title insurance commitments and policies, within delegated authority limits and established company standards. The position also guides personnel performing real estate settlement services and issues underwriting standards and guidelines through company processes.

Requirements

• 5–7 years of title underwriting experience; commercial experience is preferred.
• A law degree is required.
• Admitted to practice law in the state of employment and licensed to practice law in good standing.
• Familiarity with real estate law.
• Strong understanding of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of real estate title and settlement processes.
• Strong analytical rigor and business acumen.
• Strong negotiation skills and the ability to provide alternative solutions or convey unpopular information tactfully.
• Ability to collaborate, act decisively, and build internal and external relationships.
• Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills, including the ability to multitask, prioritize, and follow up timely.
• Ability to use abstract thinking and develop creative solutions.

Responsibilities

• Provide underwriting support, counsel, and authorization to company personnel and customers related to issuing real estate title insurance commitments and policies.
