CFD Research has an immediate opening for a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Developer/Analyst specializing in combustion. The role supports the development of advanced chemical kinetic modeling approaches for large-scale CFD simulations of combustion applications. As part of the Aerospace and Defense Solutions Division, the position supports R&D programs for NASA and the Department of War (DoW). The work also includes applied modeling and simulation of reacting flows and analysis and presentation of results.

Requirements

  • MS or PhD degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or a similar discipline.
  • Experience simulating reacting flow with Cantera, Chemkin, or similar tools.
  • At least 2 years of experience developing CFD models or advanced numerical methods; graduate work counts toward this requirement.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills and ability to devise creative software design solutions.
  • Proficiency with C++, Python, and shell languages.
  • Working knowledge of software development best practices, including version control with Git.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in team environments.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including proactive communication, presentation, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to complete assigned tasks with general supervision and oversight.
  • Ambitious, hardworking, and driven toward continuous growth.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and eligible to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Detailed knowledge of CFD combustion modeling approaches, including implicit time integration, operator-splitting, mechanism reduction, and flamelet approaches.
  • Familiarity with numerical optimization and calibration approaches, especially for chemical mechanism development.
  • Experience with advanced combustor concepts such as scramjets or rotating detonation engines.
  • Knowledge of advanced fluid models, such as non-equilibrium thermochemistry for hypersonic flows or real fluid equations of state and sharp-interface methods for multi-phase flow.
  • Familiarity with Finite-Volume and Discontinuous-Galerkin approaches.
  • Experience with mesh generation software such as ANSA, Pointwise, STAR-CCM+, or ICEM CFD.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of advanced chemical kinetic modeling approaches for large-scale CFD simulations of combustion applications.
