CFD / Aero Engineer

Whisper Aero•Nashville, TN

About The Position

Whisper Aero is seeking a diligent, creative, and hardworking Aerodynamics Engineer to support the design and analysis of advanced electric propulsion systems and their integration with advanced airframes. The role focuses on CFD analysis of components and propulsors, as well as aeropropulsive integration trades. Work includes steady-state analysis for design optimization and transient analysis supporting acoustics and aeroelasticity, and identifying and addressing system instabilities. The engineer will help drive aerodynamic, aero-structural, and aeroacoustic design decisions while working regularly with the Flight Sciences Lead, Flight Sciences team, Chief Engineer, and Technical Project Leads. The role includes identifying future propulsor/airframe integration needs and airplane designs, addressing customer requirements, providing pre-test predictions and code validation, and developing approaches and design modifications to meet those needs.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship or Green Card status.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Computational Sciences, or a related technical discipline with typically at least 4 years of related experience; or a master's degree in a similar discipline with at least 2 years of related experience; or a Ph.D. in a similar discipline.
  • Familiarity with aerodynamic analysis methods, such as potential flow codes and streamline curvature codes.
  • Experience with commercial CFD codes such as Ansys or StarCCM+.
  • Experience with a 3D CAD package such as Solidworks, NX, CATIA V5, or Fusion 360.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in Python programming, Matlab, and Julia.
  • Experience with aeroelasticity applications for turbomachinery or airframe applications.
  • Experience with force accounting for aeropropulsive applications.
  • Exposure to aeroacoustic methodologies.
  • Experience with Multidisciplinary Design Optimization methods and/or Machine Learning Surrogate Models, or development of Digital Twins.
  • Experience with electric machines and motors or hybrid electric powertrains.
  • Familiarity with data management, revision control, and version control such as Git.
  • Pilot experience and/or aircraft maintenance experience.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in and present during reviews, and provide feedback to design and flight sciences teams and technical project managers.
  • Use lower-order aerodynamic analysis and CFD to analyze aircraft systems, flow component systems, and external airframe aerodynamics.
  • Perform design optimization trades involving aerodynamic performance, acoustics, heat transfer, and aeroelastic response.
  • Provide testing support for flight projects, study tasks, and proposals.
  • Provide aerodynamic engineering knowledge to project personnel and contractors through all project phases.
  • Develop and validate flow-process methods and models to support novel propulsor and aeropropulsive integration needs.
  • Author analysis tools, such as scripts and spreadsheets, for designers to use in sizing new parts.
  • Support customers with issues that arise during product integration.
  • Write accurate and comprehensive technical reports for peer review.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive benefits package with at least 90% employer-paid plans for employees and dependents, with optional HSA/FSA accounts.
