About The Position

Coach Across America is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2010 that leverages the power of coaches to transform the lives of vulnerable youth and their communities through sports. The organization operates on the principle that well-trained coaches can be highly influential adults in young people's lives, fostering success on the field, in academics, and in life. Coach Across America collaborates with local nonprofits, schools, and sports organizations to support and train AmeriCorps coaches for a one-year service term. These coaches work in underserved communities and receive Sports-Based Youth Development training focused on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) skills to help youth achieve their full potential. This specific role seeks youth sports coaches/mentors to serve a one-year AmeriCorps term, supporting sports programs, clinics, and play at various partner sites across Los Angeles County.

Requirements

  • Passion for youth development and mentoring.
  • Culturally competent with the ability to work with a diverse group of youth (ethnicity and backgrounds).
  • Positive, can-do attitude, good work ethic, and ability to take on new challenges.
  • Team player.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident.
  • Must have, or be working towards, a High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of criminal history background checks.
  • Reliable personal transportation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs and Google Suite.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and run practices (specific sport depends on the host site).
  • Assist with set-up, break-down, and other coaching duties during game days.
  • Create and implement comprehensive curriculum-based activities for assigned grades.
  • Adapt to schedule, rotation, location, assignment, or programmatic changes with a flexible mindset to meet organizational and member needs.
  • Conduct enrichment programs for members and regularly recognize their successes.
  • Engage in meaningful and supportive relationships with members.
  • Support members with academic needs through homework help, tutoring, and collaboration with parents and/or teachers.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Input program attendance.
  • Arrive on time and adhere to the dress code.
  • Participate in required trainings.
  • Mentor groups of members as required by mentoring programs and grant requirements.
  • Potentially work occasional weekends (site-dependent).
  • Represent both Coach Across America and the host site positively, upholding their missions and values during and outside of work hours.
  • Complete the minimum required hours of service and training by the last day of the coach contract.
  • Complete bi-weekly timesheets.
  • Attend and participate in Coach Across America orientation, trainings, meetings, service days, and special initiatives.
  • Wear Coach Across America branded t-shirts with the AmeriCorps logo during coaching sessions, program sessions, and events.

Benefits

  • Living Allowance/Stipend: Varies by coach slot type. Minimum $12,150.00.
  • Education Award: Varies by coach slot type. Minimum $3,697.50.
  • Health Insurance is offered to Full-time coach slot types only.
