About The Position

This position strategically and effectively develops, implements and coordinates the expanded cross-campus Co-operative (Co-op) Education Program at UBC s Okanagan campus. This cross campus expansion saw its first student cohort enrolled in 2016, and requires the Co-op Coordinator to assess effectiveness of the current program and recommend improvements, as the program is integrated across campus. Co-op Education is an experiential learning program within the UBC system designed to provide students practical experience in the work place, while building collaborative engagements for the University with local, national and international community partners. The Coordinator is responsible for, the development, implementation and coordination of the cross campus co-op education program, coaching and mentoring students, and for the facilitation of career relevant co-op job opportunities resulting in engaged student experiential learning.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (Business or Social Sciences preferred)
  • Minimum of four years experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficient in computer applications including MS Office, email, internet research and database management
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including building community relations, and working with students
  • Strong presentation skills, for presenting key strengths of the Co-op Program to community partners and students
  • Proven communication skills both oral and written
  • Ability to coordinate and plan events and activities, some of which are large campus-wide activities
  • Some local and national travel is required

Nice To Haves

  • Career Development Practitioner Certification an asset
  • Industry related experience, either locally, nationally or internationally, is preferred
  • Facilitation experience in developing and delivering pre-employment training programs (career development) is desired

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements and coordinates the UBC Okanagan Co-op Program by developing and delivering a community engagement strategy, designing the Cross-Campus Co-op Education Program, establishing key messages for new student recruitment, setting student targets, ensuring adherence to SEWIL accreditation requirements, and executing annual communication and promotion strategies.
  • Builds community relations through creating strategic networks, managing community development efforts, determining and administering employer wage subsidies, advising employers on funding requirements, researching and reaching out to potential new community partners, and actively participating in the community of Co-op Practitioners.
  • Promote, facilitate and run the UBC Okanagan Co-op Program and additional career activities by facilitating comprehensive Co-op pre-employment and senior student training sessions, designing and developing innovative delivery of mandatory training, staying current on job seeker trends, and developing and executing campus-wide career activities.
  • Provides coaching and mentorship support and assistance to students within the Co-op program by evaluating student performance and resolving issues, evaluating Co-op Work Term Reports, ensuring student learning experience requirements are met, determining co-op student ongoing eligibility, facilitating international student job opportunities, designing and coordinating orientation and information sessions, coordinating the student Co-op application process, responsible for final selection of eligible students, planning and facilitating pre-employment and senior student training, and coaching students throughout the active job search.
  • Provides analytical data and program progress information by reporting quarterly on student work term statistics, community partner profiles, and key program information, capturing and sharing student learning experiences, analyzing labour market trends, and relaying information to students, the Dean, and campus leadership.
