About The Position

The Cornell NanoScale Science and Technology Facility (CNF) is a flexible open user facility that enables rapid advancements in science, engineering, and technology at the nanoscale by providing efficient access to nanotechnology infrastructure and expertise. CNF seeks students or other individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in the process of micro-nano fabrication and contributing to projects in a cleanroom environment. The intern will learn about fabrication equipment, maintenance, and cleanroom production to develop skills for a potential career in the semiconductor or high-tech industries. The internship is made possible through the NEXUS NE project.

Requirements

  • Two years of college coursework, preferably in engineering technology or related field, formal training or associate’s degree, or 1-2 years of work experience in a related field
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a cleanroom environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely with hazardous chemicals
  • Computer skills, including email and spreadsheets)
  • Able to work 20 hours per week for a 10- to 20-week appointment period

Responsibilities

  • Shadow technical staff and assist with daily routines, including disposing of chemical waste, monitoring gas supplies, and stocking chemicals and supplies
  • Learn how to work safely and independently in a cleanroom
  • Receive hands-on tool training and technical training on fabrication technologies, such as thin film deposition, furnace processing, photolithography, and plasma etch processing
  • Execute routine process validation and monitoring of processing equipment
  • Work with a staff mentor to develop, characterize, and document baseline processes
  • Observe staff and assist with routing maintenance or installation of tools and equipment
  • Learn metrology characterization techniques
  • Develop an independent project and prepare a written report and presentation at project’s conclusion
