About The Position

The Canmore Nordic Centre (CNC) is home to world-class winter events and the Kananaskis Region of Alberta Parks. They are looking to fill seasonal Snowmaking Crew Lead positions for the winter season, which runs from approximately late October 2026 to late February 2027. These positions primarily involve outdoor work and include evening, night, and weekend shifts, with shift premium pay. All positions are contract terms. The role involves leading, supervising, coaching, and training seasonal snowmaking crews, implementing snowmaking strategy, operating various equipment for snow production, performing equipment maintenance, monitoring pumps and compressors, tracking inventory, and supporting the winter grooming program. Additionally, the role includes participating in trail maintenance and safety, making snow for specific programs, and assisting with winter events. Success in this role requires adherence to policies and procedures, including Occupational Health and Safety, mechanical aptitude, equipment operating experience, the ability to work outdoors in winter conditions for extended periods, teamwork, good judgment, and the ability to work independently. Responding to public inquiries, addressing safety concerns, and interacting professionally with the public are also key aspects. The role may also involve leading and participating in emergency and evacuation protocols.

Requirements

  • Some high school education
  • One year of related experience, including operating and maintaining equipment
  • Some supervisory experience
  • Recognized Current Standard First Aid and CPR Level “C”/AED Certification (must be maintained as current for the entire period of hire by the employee)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent and clear 3-year Driver’s Abstract
  • Mechanical aptitude and equipment operating experience
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment
  • Ability to work outdoors in the winter for long periods of time
  • Ability to support and work with other team members within the Kananaskis Region and at Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park
  • Use good judgment and have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Be able to lift 25 kilograms

Nice To Haves

  • Experience and knowledge with snowmaking operations
  • Operating snowmobiles, ATVs, tractors or agricultural equipment
  • Good mechanical and troubleshooting skills to identify mechanical or operational issues
  • Well-developed oral and written English skills to effectively communicate with the general public to answer inquiries
  • Familiarity with Nordic skiing (Classic, Biathlon, Skate)
  • Familiarity with Kananaskis Region and surrounding area

Responsibilities

  • Lead, supervise, coach, and train seasonal snowmaking crews of three to four persons in performing snow production and related tasks.
  • Implement snowmaking strategy and plan.
  • Operate side by sides, snow machines, ATV’s and other equipment to set-up, move, operate and operate snowmaking fan guns and air/water pole guns across two stadiums and over 20 km of snowmaking serviced trails.
  • Perform regularly scheduled maintenance for equipment.
  • Monitor and operate pumps and compressors.
  • Track and maintain inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Perform support to the winter grooming program through operation of snowmobile grooming machines, especially after snowmaking is completed.
  • Participate in the monitoring, maintenance and safety of all designated trails.
  • Make snow for the Frozen Thunder program.
  • Assist in the set-up, running and clean-up of winter events.
  • Ensure there is adherence to all pertinent policies, procedures, and protocols, including Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) and following Government of Alberta guidelines.
  • Respond to public inquiries and address any safety concerns.
  • Interact with the public in a professional manner to create a positive visitor experience.
  • If needed, lead and participate in emergency and evacuation protocols to provide support to visitors and staff in emergency situations.

  • 11.6% in lieu of benefits and vacation leave
  • 5.6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays

  • Shift premium pay: $3.25 per hour for weekends
  • $2.75 per hour for evenings
  • $5.00 per hour for nights
