About The Position

AFP/Schivo is seeking an experienced, self-sufficient CNC Setup Machinist/Operator for its second-shift manufacturing team in Berlin, Connecticut. The role requires independently setting up, operating, adjusting, and troubleshooting CNC machining equipment while meeting standards for precision, quality, and productivity. This is not an entry-level operator position; the machinist must understand machining processes, interpret technical drawings, modify CNC programs when needed, and resolve production issues with limited supervision. The operator takes ownership of machine performance, part quality, and production efficiency throughout the shift. Responsibilities include machine changeovers, selecting and verifying tools and offsets, conducting first-piece inspections, maintaining production output, and addressing machining or quality issues. The position works from 4:00 p.m. to midnight, with overtime possible. The employer offers full-time employment, technically challenging precision-manufacturing work, exposure to life-sciences, diagnostics, and industrial applications, competitive compensation based on experience and technical capabilities, and opportunities for professional development and increased responsibility. No sponsorship to work in the United States is available. AFP/Schivo is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on CNC machining experience, preferably with independent setup responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to independently set up and operate CNC milling equipment.
  • Working knowledge of CNC G-code and M-code, including the ability to edit programs.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and dimensional tolerances.
  • Experience selecting and changing cutting tools, adjusting offsets, and optimizing machining parameters.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring and inspection equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions without constant supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and commitment to producing quality parts.
  • Willingness and ability to work second shift.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with 3-axis, 4-axis, or 5-axis CNC machining centers.
  • Familiarity with Fanuc, Haas, or similar CNC controls.
  • Experience machining engineering polymers such as PEEK, ULTEM, acetal, or other precision materials.
  • Experience manufacturing close-tolerance components for medical devices, life-science instrumentation, or industrial applications.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software.
  • Experience improving machining processes, reducing cycle times, and minimizing scrap.

Responsibilities

  • Independently set up and operate CNC machining centers, particularly CNC milling equipment.
  • Perform machine changeovers, including tooling, fixtures, work offsets, and program selection.
  • Establish and verify tool offsets, work coordinates, cutting parameters, and setup conditions.
  • Conduct first-piece inspections and make necessary adjustments before production.
  • Maintain production output while meeting quality and dimensional requirements.
  • Read and modify CNC G-code and M-code programs as necessary.
  • Adjust feeds, speeds, tool paths, offsets, and machining parameters to optimize performance.
  • Troubleshoot machining problems, dimensional inconsistencies, tool wear, and machine alarms; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Recognize when issues require maintenance or engineering support and communicate them effectively.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, and GD&T requirements.
  • Inspect dimensions using micrometers, calipers, indicators, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Verify parts meet specifications throughout production and address quality issues before they cause scrap or delays.
  • Maintain accurate production and inspection records.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, prioritize production jobs, and manage machine utilization.
  • Communicate production status, machine issues, and completed work to the next shift.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment and follow manufacturing procedures and safety requirements.
