About The Position

Under the general direction of the Value Stream Manager, the CNC Programmer supports production of machined and fabricated components by creating CNC programs, defining work holding and fixturing, identifying required tooling, developing supporting documentation, and guiding the machining department as needed. The CNC Programming Department is responsible for producing high-quality CNC programs on time, with minimal iterations, that yield parts within tolerance. The role primarily supports 5-axis machining centers. It develops machining processes and setup methods, contributes to process validation and continuous improvement, and assists with machine operation and troubleshooting. The position does not include supervisory responsibilities. Approximately 0–5% travel is expected. This role is based in a manufacturing plant environment. The candidate must qualify as a U.S. Person under applicable ITAR requirements and be legally authorized to work in the United States; the company cannot provide sponsorship.

Requirements

  • At least 1 year of related CNC operation experience and/or training for CNC Programmer I; the posting also describes CNC Programmer II as requiring at least 4 years of related experience and/or training.
  • Working knowledge of 5-axis programming using Mastercam or related CAD/CAM software.
  • Knowledge of 3D modeling software such as Creo/Pro-E, Solidworks, or equivalent CAD software, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Vocational education, high school diploma, or GED, or the described combination of related experience and training.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to program 5-axis machining centers to meet or exceed customer requirements.
  • Ability to use inspection tools as required and interpret geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, drawings, and schematics.
  • Understanding of and experience in a lean manufacturing environment; ability to participate in continuous improvement projects and 5S performance teams.
  • Basic arithmetic, statistics, algebra, and geometry skills.
  • Writing skills sufficient to complete documents and forms; proficiency in MS Office.
  • Ability to arrive at work on time and ready to work, work effectively with people at all organizational levels, and function flexibly in a fast-paced, changing, and ambiguous environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work additional hours on short notice to complete tasks or special projects and meet customer demands.

Nice To Haves

  • Trade school or training certificate preferred for CNC Programmer II.
  • Conversational ability in an additional language is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop sequences of operations and machining processes, primarily for 5-axis machining centers, to use production resources and equipment efficiently.
  • Design and fabricate work holding and part fixturing to secure and align material for machining; use quick changeover and lean tools to improve setups and reduce changeover time.
  • Define and select cutting tools, attachments, and machine accessories; participate in tooling trials and optimization with tooling manufacturers and vendors.
  • Define, calculate, and set machine parameters, including cutting speed, feed, depth and angle of cut, tool path, and other machine commands.
  • Retrieve, input, and edit CNC code and other computerized machine control media.
  • Participate in machining process validation, including operating machines as needed for first-of-type or trial runs to verify settings and programmed control data.
  • Create production aids and documentation, including machine setup and tooling sheets, work instructions, and procedures.
  • Assist with machine operation and troubleshooting; identify malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions and adjust machine controls or CNC programs as needed.
  • Interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, and sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities to reduce cycle time, improve production methods and equipment performance, and improve product quality.
  • Follow factory safety procedures and guidelines, maintain a clean and organized work environment, and comply with safety standards, procedures, and regulations.
  • Contribute to team efforts collaboratively and supportively; perform other duties as required in support of the department and company.
