About The Position

The CNC Programmer plans, develops, programs, sets up, and operates computer numerical controlled machines used to machine turbine engine components. Programming generally involves vertical and horizontal milling, turning, and grinding, with Mastercam and NC Plot used to develop repair codes for CNC equipment. The work must meet original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications for customers in the aerospace and marine turbine-engine industries. The role is part of a large Machining Department that includes CNC and manual machining, grinding, tool and die, R&D, CNC programming, and machinist training. The successful candidate works alongside experienced machinists and process engineers, with opportunities for ongoing interaction involving machining techniques, skill knowledge, print reading, and technical drawing interpretation. The work is performed in a climate-controlled, modern facility.

Requirements

  • Five or more years of experience operating CNC milling, turning, and/or grinding equipment.
  • Experience in a job-shop environment.
  • Experience in a made-to-order (MTO) environment.
  • First-article experience.
  • Five or more years of creative problem-solving experience involving machine setups, tooling, and fixturing.
  • Firm understanding of GD&T, critical dimensioning, and relationships between dimensions.
  • Basic CNC macro-coding experience.
  • Technical high school diploma, machinist trade school, or equivalent work experience.
  • Familiarity with shop math principles and basic trigonometry.
  • Understanding of timing or rotational values.
  • General skills including use of handheld power tools and files, and assembly and disassembly.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English and communicate with other employees.

Responsibilities

  • Follow established safety protocols and company safety policies and procedures.
  • Program and operate CNC machines to machine gas turbine engine components.
  • Develop CNC language and programs for milling, turning, and grinding to remove material and achieve required dimensions or part features.
  • Use Mastercam and NC Plot with input from process engineering and machinists to develop efficient and reliable programs.
  • Work from engineering drawings to plan, number, locate, and direct tool paths.
  • Develop and control new-product programming procedures, including test runs, first-piece inspection, and program revisions.
  • Test and evaluate completed CNC programs for accuracy.
  • Review existing programs for potential changes or improvements, including automation and new-product repair development.
  • Document setup information and instructions to support consistent repair quality.
  • Assist with fixture and tooling design.
  • Present findings and recommendations to applicable company levels.
  • Participate in problem-solving and continuous-improvement efforts, communicating with engineers, training specialists, and machinists.
  • Catalog and control program backups with the quality department.
  • Use inspection gauges, a comparator, micrometers, calipers, and miscellaneous hand tools as needed to verify dimensional accuracy.
  • Accurately record findings on work instructions and other documentation.
  • From time to time, participate in training and provide expertise in the on-the-job training program for machinist technicians.

Benefits

  • Health, vision, and dental coverage, including a fully funded health-care option with no premiums for the employee and family and a traditional employee-premium-contribution option.
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage and life insurance.
  • 401(k) program with company match.
  • Continuing education opportunities and tuition reimbursement, subject to eligibility requirements.
