About The Position

Walker Products is seeking a CNC Operator/Programmer in Fruita, Colorado. The role develops, edits, and optimizes CNC programs for new and existing precision components, and performs complete machine setups including tooling, workholding, offsets, and program verification. The position interprets engineering drawings, GD&T, specifications, and manufacturing requirements; proves out programs; and establishes repeatable machining processes for production. The CNC Operator/Programmer troubleshoots machining and quality issues, inspects first pieces and in-process work using appropriate measuring equipment, and adjusts programs, cutting parameters, tooling, and machining strategies to improve cycle time and tool life. The role documents setups, supports their transition into normal production, and works with Engineering, Quality, Production, and Maintenance to improve process capability, efficiency, and repeatability. Equipment may include Swiss-style lathes, CNC turning centers, CNC mills, multi-axis equipment, or screw-machine replacement applications, depending on Walker Products’ equipment mix. Mentioned equipment and capabilities include Tsugami B0-205/B0-206 and S-206 machines, Citizen Swiss capability, live tooling, and sub-spindles. Programming software includes Espirit, Bobcad, and Mastercam, with programming at the control when needed. The work involves small, precision-machined components made from materials such as stainless steel, carbon and alloy steels, aluminum, and brass, with tight tolerances and applicable surface-finish requirements.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to independently develop CNC programs and machining processes from engineering drawings.
  • Ability to select tooling and workholding strategies, determine speeds and feeds and operation sequences, and establish inspection requirements.
  • Experience programming and setting up CNC equipment such as Swiss-style lathes, CNC turning centers, CNC mills, multi-axis equipment, or screw-machine replacement applications, depending on the equipment mix.
  • Ability to program at the control when required.
  • Understanding of G-code and M-code.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and edit existing programs without completely reprogramming a job.
  • Ability to hold dimensional requirements of ±0.0005 in. or tighter where required, if representative of actual work.
  • Working knowledge of surface-finish requirements.
  • Ability to interpret and apply GD&T.
  • Experience with tight-tolerance production machining and small, precision-machined components.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Tsugami B0-205, B0-206, or S-206 machines.
  • Citizen Swiss capability.
  • Live tooling and sub-spindle experience.
  • Experience with Espirit, Bobcad, or Mastercam programming software.
  • Experience machining stainless steels, carbon or alloy steels, aluminum, brass, or other applicable materials.

  • Troubleshoot dimensional, tooling, machine, and process-related issues.
  • Perform first-piece and in-process inspection using appropriate measuring equipment.
  • Adjust programs, speeds, feeds, tooling, and machining strategies to improve cycle time and tool life.
  • Document setup information so processes can be reliably repeated by production personnel.
  • Support the transition of completed setups into normal production.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce cycle time, setup time, scrap, and tooling cost.
  • Develop standardized setup documentation.
  • Assist with fixture and workholding development.
  • Improve process capability and repeatability.
  • Support root-cause analysis of machining and quality problems.
  • Assist with new-product introduction and first-article activities.
  • Train CNC operators on established processes and setup requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with Engineering, Quality, Production, and Maintenance.
