About The Position

Schafer Industries is currently seeking a CNC ID / OD Grinding Machinist for its Schafer Gear Works operation in Roscoe Illinois. This position offers a $1000 sign-on bonus and a 401K match within an air-conditioned/heated manufacturing facility. The pay range is $25 - $35 per hour. Requirements

  • Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position, including the ability to walk, stand, lift, carry up to 50 pounds, push, kneel, bend, stoop, reach over and under waist level, twist for extended periods of time on cement or other hard surfaces, etc.
  • Demonstrates the verbal and written communication skills necessary to complete forms and take messages in a legible, accurate manner.
  • Two-year certification from technical school or two plus years of experience.
  • Must be able to communicate in English.
  • Ability to use a computer.

Responsibilities

  • Operate assigned machinery to fabricate parts to the required specifications by setting up and operating the machine, selecting, aligning, and securing holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on CNC machines.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth, and angle of grind, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Set up and operate machines on trial runs to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data in accordance with setup time parameters.
  • Ensure all parts are to the required specifications by maintaining and improving the quality of parts produced, studying blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Verify conformance of finished work piece specifications, comply with all work instructions, and follow and maintain ISO and Schafer procedures.
  • Complete Schafer’s quality certification requirements for assigned area.
  • Ensure the operational effectiveness of all assigned equipment by starting and observing machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusting machine controls or control media as required.
  • Install tooling into machines and equipment and test operation of the unit to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems.
  • Support the Schafer Business Process by maintaining and continuously improving the productivity of assigned machines.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Continuously look at tool life and new tooling to cut costs on tools.
  • Reduce downtime of machines setups.
  • Get computer setup ready by preparing tooling, fixtures, steel, gages, etc. for jobs at assigned machines.
  • Maintain the 6S program in assigned area.
  • Submit required number of continuous improvement ideas.
  • Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the company by channeling problems and/or complaints to the appropriate person for resolution.
  • Support all Schafer policies and procedures.
  • Report to Supervisor when assignments cannot be completed.
  • Provide input and assistance with the implementation of quality improvement.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.
  • Pass along vital information in the logbook for subsequent shifts.
  • Train new personnel in the operation of assigned machines.
  • Assist and/or train in other Grind areas as needed.
