CNC Machinist - Precision Prototyping

Observable Space•Los Angeles, CA
•$30 - $50•Hybrid

About The Position

Observable Space is seeking a skilled CNC Machinist for its advanced prototyping facility in Los Angeles. The hands-on role operates CNC equipment to manufacture complex, high-precision components for optical, aerospace, and mechanical systems. The facility supports rapid prototyping and low-volume manufacturing using aluminum, titanium, stainless steel, specialty alloys, glass, and other materials. The machinist will work in a fast-paced prototyping environment, collaborate with engineers, troubleshoot machining challenges, and adapt to changing project requirements. Occasional evening or weekend availability is required for time-sensitive projects. The role includes operating CNC mills and lathes; machining parts from drawings, CAD models, and instructions; inspecting components; maintaining equipment and shop safety; and supporting prototype development, engineering changes, fixtures, and other fabrication processes. The position is based in Los Angeles and requires at least three days per week in the office. The posting describes a flexible or hybrid work setup, with remote work part of the week.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of hands-on CNC machining experience in a machine shop, precision manufacturing, or engineering prototyping environment.
  • Experience operating CNC milling machines and/or CNC lathes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, machining specifications, and basic GD&T.
  • Experience using precision measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and height gauges.
  • Understanding of machining fundamentals, including cutting tools, speeds and feeds, material removal, and surface finishes.
  • Experience machining common metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium.
  • Ability to recognize machining defects, troubleshoot basic issues, and maintain consistent part quality.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and commitment to precision workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned machining tasks and collaborate effectively with engineers and other technicians.
  • Willingness to occasionally support time-sensitive projects outside standard business hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating multi-axis CNC mills, including 4-axis or 5-axis machines.
  • Experience in prototype, high-mix/low-volume, or research and development manufacturing environments.
  • Experience machining tight-tolerance components for aerospace, robotics, optics, or precision mechanical applications.
  • Experience operating manual machine tools, including Bridgeport-style vertical milling machines and manual engine lathes, for precision machining, prototype fabrication, part modification, and rework.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks or other CAD software for viewing and interpreting part models.
  • Experience with complex workholding, custom fixtures, and precision machining techniques.
  • Familiarity with wire EDM, waterjet cutting, laser cutting, and additive manufacturing.
  • Experience with CMM inspection or other advanced metrology equipment.
  • Experience machining specialty alloys, difficult-to-machine materials, or components requiring specialized handling.
  • Familiarity with vacuum-compatible materials and manufacturing cleanliness requirements.
  • General fabrication experience, including TIG welding, sheet metal fabrication, or mechanical assembly.
  • Experience with deburring, surface preparation, painting, and other finishing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Operate CNC milling machines, including 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis equipment, and CNC lathes to manufacture precision components.
  • Machine complex parts using engineering drawings, CAD models, and established machining instructions.
  • Monitor machining operations and adjust processes to maintain dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and part quality.
  • Select and change cutting tools, monitor tool wear, and identify machining issues during production.
  • Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using precision measuring instruments.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, machining specifications, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Troubleshoot machining issues involving tooling, materials, surface finish, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Perform deburring, finishing, and other post-machining operations.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, optical, and manufacturing engineers on prototype and low-volume precision components.
  • Provide feedback on machining challenges, material behavior, and part manufacturability.
  • Support rapid design iterations, engineering changes, and one-off component fabrication.
  • Assist with fabrication and modification of custom fixtures, jigs, and tooling.
  • Work with materials including titanium, stainless steel, aluminum, engineering plastics, and specialty alloys.
  • Support wire EDM, waterjet cutting, laser cutting, and additive manufacturing as needed.
  • Contribute to improvements in machining processes, shop workflows, and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Inspect finished components for dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and conformance to specifications.
  • Use precision inspection equipment, including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and dial indicators.
  • Document inspection results, machining issues, and quality concerns.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized machining environment and follow safety, quality, and equipment guidelines.
  • Occasionally assist with mechanical assembly, integration, and test fixture development.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation aligned with industry standards and experience.
  • Stock options.
  • Flexible work setup, including office or hybrid work, with remote work part of the week and a minimum of three office days per week for the LA office.
  • Unlimited PTO for exempt employees, including paid holidays.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, with 100% of employee premiums paid by the employer.
  • Access to the latest hardware and software.
  • Mission-driven culture and a supportive, diverse workplace.
