About The Position

The CNC Machinist II is an intermediate-level machinist responsible for independently operating CNC machines, performing basic setups, changing and adjusting tooling without supervision, troubleshooting routine machine and process issues, and supporting the training of new hires. The role requires technical judgment, ownership of assigned equipment, and proactive communication to support safe, efficient, and high-quality production. The machinist performs routine setups, tooling changes, and offset adjustments, and makes independent decisions within the assigned scope to maintain quality and efficiency. Complex setup, programming, tooling, or quality issues are escalated to a CNC Machinist III, CNC Machinist Lead, or Supervisor. The position also supports production organization, continuous improvement, and waste reduction, and helps maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. The position is in a manufacturing machine shop, with exposure to machine noise, metal chips, coolants, oils, fumes, mists, and temperature variations. Required PPE includes safety glasses, steel-toe footwear, and hearing protection. Physical requirements include standing and walking for the entire shift; lifting, carrying, and moving up to 30 pounds; repetitive hand and wrist motions; operating machine doors; loading parts into chucks or fixtures; bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and grasping; and sufficient visual acuity to read measuring instruments, machine displays, and blueprints. The role participates in promoting the site's health, safety, and environmental culture; follows applicable HSE rules and policies; reports or corrects hazards when possible; implements preventive actions to reduce environmental impact and manage safety risks; and may participate in risk or incident analyses and HSE working groups.

Requirements

  • 3–4 years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to perform basic CNC machine setups independently.
  • Ability to select tooling and change all tooling without supervision.
  • Ability to troubleshoot routine machining and process issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and basic GD&T.
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment.
  • Strong communication skills for pass-downs and problem-solving discussions.
  • Ability to stand and walk for the entire shift.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to perform frequent repetitive hand and wrist motions and to open and close machine doors repeatedly.
  • Ability to load parts into chucks or fixtures and to bend, reach, push, pull, and grasp as required.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to read measuring instruments, machine displays, and blueprints.
  • Ability to follow safety rules, job safety analyses, and PPE requirements; complete inspections and documentation accurately; and stop work and escalate safety or quality concerns.
  • Familiarity with the site's HSE policy and objectives and with the principal health, safety, and environmental risks and impacts related to the work.

  • Experience supporting or training less-experienced machinists.

Responsibilities

  • Operate CNC machines according to established programs, work instructions, and safety procedures.
  • Perform basic machine setups, including tooling changes, offsets, and fixture adjustments.
  • Select appropriate material, tool holders, and tooling for assigned jobs according to work instructions and engineering requirements.
  • Change all tooling independently and without supervision.
  • Adjust tooling and offsets to maintain dimensional accuracy and part quality.
  • Troubleshoot routine machine, tooling, and dimensional issues on assigned equipment.
  • Recognize improper machine functioning, take corrective action within scope, and escalate complex issues to a CNC Machinist III, CNC Machinist Lead, or Supervisor.
  • Use pass-down sheets when face-to-face shift changeover is not feasible and participate in face-to-face problem-solving meetings to communicate tooling changes and tool-life concerns, maintenance or equipment issues, performance or repeatability trends, and setup or job status.
  • Use shop-floor systems for production tracking, quality documentation, and communication.
  • Assist supervisors, mechanical engineers, and planners in organizing work and supporting continuous improvement and reductions in setup time, cycle time, and machine downtime.
  • Implement and suggest departmental waste-elimination initiatives, including recycling opportunities and reducing production-related waste.
  • Train and support new hires on machine operation, tooling changes, inspection methods, and shop procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with 5S standards.
  • Comply with company safety, quality, and production policies.
  • Promote the HSE culture, follow health, safety, and environmental rules, correct or report hazards, and implement preventive actions to reduce environmental impact and control risks.
  • Participate upon request in risk and incident analyses and HSE working groups related to the role.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support operational needs.
