About The Position

The CMM Technician will be responsible for operating and programming Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) to perform precision dimensional inspections. This role involves interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, and generating detailed inspection reports. The technician will also be involved in equipment maintenance, calibration, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to resolve quality issues and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3+ years of CMM operation/programming experience in automotive manufacturing
  • Proficient in PC-DMIS
  • Solid knowledge of GD&T
  • Ability to proficiently read mechanical drawings and blueprints
  • Proficient with conventional precision measuring tools including calipers, micrometers, height gauges, pin gauges, thread gauges, etc.
  • Detail-oriented with analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Good communication skills for cross-functional collaboration
  • Ability to work rotating shifts and overtime (including weekends and holidays)

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree or relevant technical certificate preferred
  • Familiarity with Calypso preferred
  • Experience with PolyWorks, ATOS/GOM is a plus
  • Experience in automotive parts industry preferred
  • Experience in battery box welded assembly inspection
  • Familiarity with quality tools such as PPAP, SPC
  • Knowledge of 8D, 5-Why problem-solving methods
  • Experience with portable measurement equipment (e.g., Faro arm, laser tracker)

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and related measurement equipment to perform precision dimensional inspection of aluminum extrusions, welded assemblies, and machined parts
  • Write, edit, and optimize CMM measurement programs (software includes but is not limited to PC-DMIS, Calypso, Open DMIS, etc.)
  • Program from electronic drawing files or create measurement programs from physical parts via reverse engineering when necessary
  • Perform First Article Inspection (FAI), in-process patrol inspection, and final outgoing inspection
  • Interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and GD&T requirements to ensure measurement methods comply with standards
  • Generate detailed inspection reports, record measurement data, and analyze product conformance
  • Identify non-conforming parts and promptly report abnormalities to Quality Engineer and production team
  • Perform daily calibration, probe verification, and maintenance of CMM equipment
  • Manage gauge control system, track calibration cycles and R&R studies of fixtures and gauges
  • Maintain CMM program revision change records and operation logs
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to resolve measurement-related quality issues
  • Participate in root cause analysis of quality issues using 8D, 5-Why methodologies
  • Support dimensional verification required for PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) submissions for new projects
  • Train other operators to run existing inspection programs on CMM
