About The Position

The CMM Operator provides dimensional inspection support using Zeiss coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). The operator runs approved CALYPSO programs, loads parts and fixtures according to documented setup, verifies alignment, stylus readiness, and environmental conditions, and generates standard inspection reports. The role protects data integrity by not modifying approved programs and by escalating suspect results, errors, and setup issues before data is accepted. The position performs dimensional measurements and inspections to engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards; supports routine equipment care, calibration, and verification; analyzes results for conformance; and communicates issues to Engineering and Production. The operator must use sound judgment and clearly escalate issues, particularly during the weekend shift when on-site engineering support is limited.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
1–3 years of dimensional inspection experience using Coordinate Measuring Machines.
Experience handling precision components.
Understanding of blueprint reading and comprehension, GD&T symbols, and datums.
Proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office, and ability to learn CALYPSO and quality-data systems.

Nice To Haves

Associate degree or technical certifications in metrology, quality, engineering technology, manufacturing, or a related field.
Formal GD&T training or certification (ASME Y14.5).
3+ years of progressive CMM operation and programming experience, ideally including hands-on Zeiss CALYPSO programming.
Ability to create, edit, and optimize CALYPSO programs for routine and moderately complex parts, including features, characteristics, reports, alignments from drawing datums, clearance planes, and retraction paths, and to support first-article, in-process, and final inspection.
Ability to select and qualify probes and styli; choose point or scanning strategies based on feature type, geometry, tolerance, and risk; and apply and evaluate GD&T, including datum reference frames, position, form, orientation, roundness, profile, and material condition modifiers.
Ability to validate results against known-good parts, hand tools, or gages; troubleshoot setup, alignment, stylus, and strategy errors within authorized limits; and document, submit, and store program changes according to document-control requirements.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, customer specifications, inspection plans, and quality procedures.
Proficiency with reporting, quality-data systems, and document control.

Responsibilities

Set up and operate CMMs to perform dimensional measurements and inspections according to engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
Operate Zeiss CMMs using approved CALYPSO programs, selecting the correct program and revision level.
Perform routine maintenance and calibration of CMM equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
Recognize and escalate probe collisions, out-of-tolerance results, bad data, misloads, incomplete runs, and system errors.
Handle and store probes and styli safely, preventing collisions through clearance awareness and dry-run discipline.
Perform routine care of CMM equipment, support calibration and verification, and keep the work area clean and organized.
Analyze measurement data and inspection results to determine part conformance and identify non-conformities.
Generate inspection reports and provide detailed summaries of issues or concerns to facilitate collaboration with Engineering and Production teams.
Communicate with Zeiss technical support about machine issues and error messages, and document and follow guidance within authorized limits.
Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work area.
