This role functions as the charge RN, directing and supervising patient care within the department. The Clinical Manager oversees daily operations of units, maintains awareness of patient status, and ensures ongoing appropriate care management assignments and plans of care. A primary clinical focus (70-80%) is expected. Responsibilities include participating in evaluations of care delivery, patient classification, and staffing systems, ensuring appropriate scheduling and staffing of the unit. The manager reviews patient care records for appropriate documentation, performs chart audits, and identifies and addresses staff education needs through clinical coaching and structured education programs. They provide orientation and education to staff and nursing students, supervise RN practice to validate professional competency, and collaborate with the department director on hiring, termination, counseling, performance evaluations, and corrective actions. The Clinical Manager must be able to meet patient care requirements of a staff RN and provide patient care as needed. They also assist the department director in creating, updating, or reviewing policies and procedures with evidence-based research, investigate patient complaints, monitor daily productivity, adjust staffing levels, and facilitate staff breaks. The role promotes current evidence-based practice and appropriate implementation of standards of care, and is accountable for the implementation and sustainability of new processes.
