About The Position

This position is for a Clinical Assistant in a school-based health center. The role involves a variety of clinical and administrative tasks to support patient care within the school environment. The assistant will interact with students, parents, and healthcare providers, manage appointments, handle patient data, perform basic medical tests, administer medications, and maintain the clinical environment. There is a potential for a $500 signing bonus for certified/registered/licensed Medical Assistants.

Requirements

  • Completion of Medical Assisting program, with evidence of training in clinic procedures and duties.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification Required.
  • None (experience requirement).

  • Computer skills.
  • Ability to respond appropriately and consistently to managerial directives.
  • Ability to seek and utilize supervision appropriately.
  • Able to communicate effectively with, and relate to, a diverse population.

  • Must be able to sit, stand, and or walk for an entire workday.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, and or twist while holding up to 25 lbs. frequently.

Responsibilities

  • Answers telephones promptly, handles/screens calls, schedules patient appointments, and takes messages.
  • Greets students and visitors courteously and schedules return appointments.
  • Verifies insurance coverage, conducts income determinations, assigns payment category, and updates patient information.
  • Inputs data into the computer according to policies and procedures.
  • Collects patient fees, issues receipts, and is responsible for safeguarding monies collected.
  • Tallies and deposits clinic totals daily.
  • Reports potential problems to appropriate billing personnel.
  • Escorts patients to exam rooms and prepares them for healthcare providers by obtaining vital signs, height, weight, determining visit reason, checking immunization status, and performing appropriate screening assessments.
  • Assists medical/nursing providers with physical exams, gynecological exams, minor surgery, wound care, nebulizer treatments, audio/tympanometry, and other procedures.
  • Performs minor laboratory tests (hemoglobin, blood glucose, urinalysis, strep, mono).
  • Performs phlebotomy services and prepares laboratory specimens for analysis.
  • Enters orders for completed testing and health maintenance measures.
  • Responds and assists staff with emergencies.
  • Prepares and administers medications, including immunizations, ordered by the provider or per protocol.
  • Documents accurately in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Follows 340B Documentation and Storage Protocol.
  • Participates in professional development trainings and webinars.
  • Updates EHR and maintains accurate clinical data with incoming medical reports.
  • Sends appropriate reports to be scanned.
  • Performs follow-up functions, including tracking.
  • Informs patients of lab and diagnostic test results as delegated by provider.
  • Provides limited patient education as directed by the provider or team leader.
  • Processes clinical forms.
  • Maintains clinical environment, including cleaning and disinfecting exam rooms and work areas.
  • Participates in procedure room checks, refrigerator temperature checks, medication and supplies expiration date checks, and quality control assessments for CLIA Waived in-house labs.
  • Maintains and uses patient care equipment appropriately and reports malfunctions.
  • Serves as an advocate for SBHC services in the school and community.
  • Assists other SBHC staff with special projects, health promotion, and outreach.
  • Participates in after-hours school-related activities when needed.
  • Maintains desktop tasks and assists as delegated by Nurse Manager/School Health Services Director.
  • Fills in for other staff as needed and qualified.
  • Assists the Nurse Manager as necessary.
  • Participates in team meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
