About The Position
Under the general supervision of the Youth Recreation Coordinator, Community Recreation Center Climbing Staff provide a safe, welcoming, and engaging climbing environment for participants of all ages and skill levels. This safety-sensitive role requires strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of community members. Staff enforce safety rules, provide quality customer service, and maintain a safe and positive atmosphere in the climbing area. The Community Recreation Center is planned as part of the City of Grand Junction’s Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan. Design and construction are expected to proceed over the next few years, with an anticipated opening in late 2026. The selected candidate will join a team focused on providing services to Grand Junction residents and visitors, building community, and improving quality of life on the Western Slope.
Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Must be able to pass a drug screen, background check, and, if required, a physical examination.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work with children and adults in an active setting.
- Sound judgment and attention to safety.
- General knowledge of climbing safety, etiquette, equipment, and best practices.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid CPR/First Aid certificate.
Responsibilities
- Enforce climbing wall safety rules and facility regulations.
- Properly fit harnesses, including full-body harnesses, for youth and adults.
- Supervise climbing activities and special group rentals.
- Inspect equipment and maintain cleanliness of climbing areas.
- Provide professional, friendly customer service in a safe and fun environment.
- Teach basic climbing techniques.
- Certify climbers to use the climbing wall when staff are not present.
