About The Position

Whatcom County District Court is recruiting for a Clerk III - Cashier. This role involves great customer service and cash handling experience. The position offers an exciting opportunity to join the court system and learn about court procedures. The Clerk III/Cashier will be responsible for receiving, receipting, and recording payments for court fines, bail, penalty assessments, and fees, while maintaining and balancing the cash drawer daily. Additionally, the role involves assisting the public with court filings, scheduling hearings, setting up payment plans, arranging participation in the Court Parks Work Program, and making referrals to the Department of Assigned Counsel and Adult Probation. The position also includes processing anti-harassment/protection orders, responding to court-related inquiries via phone and in person, and directing case participants to the appropriate courtroom. Coordination of contested hearing scheduling and summons/subpoena processing is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years of progressively responsible general office, clerical and/or secretarial experience.
  • One year of experience must involve cash handling.
  • Ability to type proficiently and accurately at 40 net words per minute.
  • Ability to use a calculator by touch with accuracy at 110 strokes per minute.

  • Experience in court or legal procedures is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, receipts and records payments of court fines, bail, penalty assessments and fees according to established court procedures.
  • Maintains and balances cash drawer at the end of each day.
  • Assists the public in processing court filings, arranging for court hearings, setting up monthly time payments, arranging for participation in Court Parks Work Program, and in referrals to Department of Assigned Counsel and Adult Probation.
  • Processes anti-harassment/protection orders.
  • Responds to court-related telephone and counter inquiries and/or complaints from other departments, organizations and the public.
  • Greets and directs case participants to appropriate courtroom.
  • Coordinates contested hearing scheduling and summons/subpoena processing.
