About The Position

The Cleaner is responsible for performing building cleaning and other duties to ensure that buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner. This role involves maintaining the overall cleanliness of buildings, including offices, showers, bathrooms, and common areas, as well as external areas. The position requires adherence to safety standards, including COVID-19 protocols, and proper storage of cleaning supplies. The Cleaner will also operate a motor vehicle for picking up and moving goods and supplies, and participate in team meetings and training sessions. Ensuring Health and Safety compliance, following program policies, and maintaining confidentiality of client information are crucial aspects of this role. The Cleaner is expected to represent the organization professionally and may be assigned other duties by the Operations Manager.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 1 year Janitor/ cleaner work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in residential and commercial cleaning setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Violence Against Women sector.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, tradition, language, and Indigenous community.
  • Conscientious, organized and attention to detail.
  • Willingness to wear personal protective apparel (mask, gloves, etc.).
  • Ability to adhere to the site safety policies, confidentiality and dress code.
  • Ontario Class G Driver’s License, use of an automobile, and appropriate insurance coverage.
  • Providing a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC).
  • Must sign Oath of Confidentiality.
  • Must have First Aid Level C Certification.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Must provide proof of full Covid-19 vaccination or medical exemption
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds.

  • Ability to speak Ojibway, Oji-Cree or Cree.
  • Knowledge of a variety of cleaning supplies and cleaning equipment that adhere to a scent free workspace.

Responsibilities

  • To work from a holistic perspective, utilizing the teachings of the medicine wheel and Seven Grandfather teachings.
  • To utilize Elders for teachings, healing and guidance.
  • To take personal responsibility to increase sensitivity, awareness and implementation of Beendigen’s cultural teachings and organizational practices in both professional conduct and work-related deliverables.
  • To complete and maintain related records.
  • To maintain overall cleanliness of buildings.
  • To clean offices, showers, bathrooms, and common areas.
  • To sweep, mop and vacuum all floor areas.
  • To dust all furniture, fixtures and equipment.
  • To wash and disinfect all washroom floors, toilets, toilet seats, hand dryers and fixtures in the washrooms and showers.
  • To replenish all cleaning supplies in building including but not limited to: paper towel, soap, multi purpose sanitizing spray, and hand sanitizer.
  • To clean windows, empty all waste baskets, garbage cans, shredders and recycling bins.
  • To clean and remove litter/garbage from external areas such as entranceways, sidewalks, and parking lots using appropriate equipment.
  • To place all garbage and recycling in the outside storage area and maintain the area.
  • To ensure all designated outdoor smoking areas are clean and litter free.
  • To use appropriate safety equipment at all times.
  • To maintain covid standards of cleaning and recommendations and to include high touch areas
  • To ensure cleaning materials and supplies are stored in a safe and orderly manner.
  • To works in cooperation with other staff and contractors to correct safety deficiencies.
  • To ensure building and equipment meet all safety, security and fire regulations and policies.
  • To operate a motor vehicle to pick up and move goods and supplies.
  • To constructively participate in all team meetings, seminars and staff training sessions as required.
  • To ensure Health and Safety compliance in the workplace by following policies, procedures and best practices and reporting any unsafe environments.
  • To follow confidential handling of client information as dictated by Privacy Legislation.
  • To adhere to program best practices and policies and procedures.
  • To be prepared to work in conjunction with the philosophy and mandate of the organization.
  • To preserve confidentiality of all residents, clients, staff, students, volunteers and agency information.
  • To represent the organization in a positive and professional manner at all times.
  • Any other duties as requested by the Operations Manager; commensurate with role.
