About The Position

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office (OPSO), New Orleans, Louisiana, provides the care, custody, control, and rehabilitation of inmates. We are committed to providing the highest level of service and security to the court systems, executing court mandates, and protecting individuals’ rights and freedoms. Our Mission will be achieved through innovative leadership and programs, as well as the dedication and diligence of our employees. The Classification Manager is responsible for supervising the classification staff to ensure that staff conduct appropriate intake interviews to assess needs regarding residence, employment, education, drug/alcohol, mental health problems, and past and present involvement in the criminal justice system. The Classification Manager ensures that staff elicit accurate information for the purpose of classification and then assign the resident(s) to the appropriate OJC housing unit. The Classification Manager will be familiar with the current Jail Management System (AS-400) or similar. The Classification Manager will also liaise with OJC custodial staff to ensure the appropriate resident housing location is maintained.

Requirements

  • Possesses computer literacy, including Microsoft Office
  • Proficient in the AS-400 Jail Management System or similar.
  • Conducts resident interviews tactfully and objectively to elicit the most information possible that could impact their classification or status.
  • Works independently and with others, including civilian or law enforcement personnel or external agencies, in order to achieve the objectives and functions of the Classification Unit.

Responsibilities

  • Coaches and supervises staff and sustains teamwork within the Classification Unit and with other areas of the OJC.
  • Assigns workload, provides direction, establishes priorities, and ensures work complies with quality standards.
  • Resolves staff complaints, grants leave requests, and participates in employee selection and disciplinary processes.
  • Conducts regular audits of staff work and housing units to ensure the integrity of the classification system regarding policies and procedures, and provides regular reports to stakeholders.
  • Provides staffing orientation and refresher training. Conducts monthly staff meetings.
  • Discusses classification problems and concerns raised and disseminates information promptly.
  • May conduct face-to-face interviews regarding the assessment of the resident(s) safety, reasons for behavior, or grievance follow-up issues to achieve a solution to the issue while maintaining all OPSO. policies are adhered to.
