About The Position

Under direct supervision, provides entry-level professional support for Classification & Compensation services by serving as the initial point of contact for campus inquiries and applying established CSU policies, procedures, and Collective Bargaining Agreements to deliver accurate guidance and high-quality customer service. Reviews recruitment position descriptions and related documentation to ensure alignment with CSU classification standards and established guidelines. Coordinates and processes classification and compensation transactions, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance while tracking requests and supporting timely workflow completion. Maintains and updates HR data and records within automated systems, generates reports, and compiles data to support program operations and decision-making. Assists with documentation, correspondence, and recordkeeping functions to ensure audit readiness and adherence to records retention requirements. Provides coordination support for projects, communications, and HR events, contributing to the effective delivery of Classification & Compensation and broader Human Resources services.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Relevant education and/or experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • General knowledge of human resources, benefits administration, recruitment, and/or another human resources discipline.
  • Skill in following guidelines and providing input and feedback as required and applicable to regulatory compliance.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the CSU Classification process is preferred, along with a working knowledge of CSU classification procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the Peoplesoft/CHRS software is also desired.
  • Ability to organize and plan work and projects, including handling multiple priorities.
  • Ability to compile, write, and present reports related to program or administrative specialty.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the workgroup and serve as a liaison for the organizational unit.
  • Must be customer-service-focused and able to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of employees and managers in a team-based environment.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the initial point of contact for Classification & Compensation (Class & Comp) Services by responding to inquiries via phone, email, and service systems providing general guidance based on CSU and campus policies, procedures, and Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).
  • Applies established guidelines to answer routine questions related to classification and compensation processes, including but not limited to in-range progressions, reclassifications, and stipends.
  • Escalates complex or sensitive issues to appropriate HR professionals.
  • Conducts basic research and follow-up to ensure accurate and timely responses, maintaining a high level of customer service and confidentiality in all interactions.
  • Applies established classification and compensation policies and procedures when reviewing recruitment position descriptions, and related documents to ensure alignment with CSU standards.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing for a variety of classification and compensation-related transactions within HR systems, including but not limited to, staff transaction memos, reassignment actions, appointment changes, reclassifications, and in-range progressions.
  • Reviews transactions for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with established procedures and supporting documentation, and coordinates with Payroll and other staff to resolve discrepancies.
  • Tracks incoming requests through workflow systems, ensuring required documentation is submitted and routed appropriately for analyst review.
  • Monitors temporary appointment end dates to ensure timely action and compliance with CSU requirements, and drafts and distributes correspondence to appropriate personnel regarding upcoming expirations, extensions, or required actions.
  • Prepares correspondence, including but not limited to letters and notifications, for review and signature.
  • Monitors data in automated HR information systems to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established policies and procedures; reviewing records for accuracy and completeness against source documentation; verifying data fields, codes, and effective dates; running system queries and standard reports to identify discrepancies; coordinating corrections with appropriate staff; and following established data entry, validation, and record-keeping procedures to ensure data integrity and compliance with CSU and campus requirements.
  • Regularly runs standard system reports, formats and organizes data, and applies basic formulas or calculations to support reporting needs.
  • Maintains organized electronic and physical records, including position description libraries, and follows up with departments to obtain missing or incomplete documentation.
  • Supports the development and maintenance of program materials, including forms, procedures, and guidance documents, ensuring consistency and accuracy.
  • Contributes to maintaining and updating Class & Comp web content and internal documentation as needed.
  • Provides coordination support for Classification & Compensation projects and broader Human Resources initiatives by assisting with scheduling, preparing materials, organizing meetings, and drafting meeting notes.
  • Assists with various HR events and activities, including logistical coordination, preparing materials, and supporting event execution.
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to support communication efforts, including distributing campus-wide announcements and assembling informational materials.
  • Assists with updating presentations and training materials and supports logistical needs for program activities.
  • Performs other classification-related duties as assigned in support of Classification & Compensation and broader Human Resources operations, applying foundational HR knowledge, attention to detail, and professional judgment consistent with the Human Resources Professional I classification.
