About The Position

California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) is seeking a Classification and Compensation Manager to lead and oversee compensation, classification, document administration, records, and other pay programs. This role provides solutions to complex compensation and HR issues, manages the Compensation Services team, and ensures adherence to campus, CSU, state, and federal guidelines. The incumbent will serve as the campus subject-matter expert, offering consultation on organizational, compensation, and workforce-planning matters, and identifying solutions across organizational boundaries. The position also involves participation in system-wide committees, development of internal guidelines, and contribution to HR division initiatives. The role directly supervises one Classification and Compensation Analyst.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience in compensation administration.
  • Five to eight years of professional human resources experience.
  • Proficiency in the use of Excel spreadsheets.
  • Proficiency in written and oral communications.
  • Proven experience in teaching small groups as well as one on one effective communications skills.
  • Experience in significant and continuous use of positive customer service.
  • Proven experience in the areas of compensation administration including use of classification systems, conducting surveys and good mathematical skills.
  • Demonstrated interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment.
  • Must reside in the State of California.
  • Must complete a background check (including a criminal records check) satisfactorily.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in human resources from an accredited college or university or business operations field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CMS/PeopleSoft experience.
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working in the California State University system.
  • Familiarity with various CBAs and Management Personnel Plan in the CSU System.
  • Familiarity with Cal State LA Compensation processes.
  • Experience leading and delivering training for management-level personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and oversight of compensation, classification, document administration, and records.
  • Management of other pay programs such as MPP/C99 Merit.
  • Providing solutions to a wide range of difficult compensation and HR related issues.
  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the Compensation Services team, including hiring, coaching, training, and feedback.
  • Ensuring all actions adhere to campus and CSU guidelines and policies, state and federal regulations, and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Serving as the campus subject-matter expert on classification and compensation.
  • Providing consultation and guidance to campus leadership on complex organizational, compensation, and workforce-planning matters.
  • Providing guidance and assistance to campus partners.
  • Identifying issues and formulating solutions across organizational boundaries to ensure compliance.
  • Participating in system-wide committees and work groups.
  • Developing internal guidelines and procedures.
  • Participating in and contributing to the development of project improvement initiatives within the division of Human Resources.
  • Serving on and chairing campus committees, as needed.
  • Directly supervising one Confidential (C99) Classification and Compensation Analyst.
