About The Position

The Oak Park City Council serves as the legislative and governing body of the City of Oak Park, operating under a council-manager form of government. The Council is composed of a Mayor, a Mayor Pro Tem, and three at-large Council Members, who are collectively responsible for setting policy, providing strategic direction, and ensuring the effective governance of the city. The mayor is elected at every regularly scheduled city election and serves a two-year term, while the remaining City Council Members are elected to four-year staggered terms, with two seats up for election during each regular election cycle. The City Manager oversees the day-to-day operations of the city, including the supervision of staff and department directors, and, along with the City Attorney, serves at the pleasure of the Council. Candidates for city council must meet specific eligibility requirements, including being a qualified and registered elector of the City of Oak Park, maintaining at least one year of residency prior to the filing deadline or appointment, and not being in default to the city or any other governmental unit within the state. In the event of a council vacancy, the remaining Council Members will appoint a qualified candidate to serve until the next regular city election. The current vacancy will fill the seat previously held by Councilmember Shaun Whitehead, with the appointed individual serving through November 2027. Please submit a cover letter and resume for consideration. Completed applications must be received by 4:00 p.m. on June 1, 2026. Selected applicants will be invited to interview after 5:30 p.m. on June 8, 2026.
