About The Position

The Chief of Staff will oversee Legislative Affairs as well as coordinate operations and initiatives of the Pontiac City Council. In addition to overseeing Legislative Affairs, the Chief of Staff must be able to perform the essential duties and may be called upon to do any or all of the following: Coordinates and supervises the Staff in the Office of the Pontiac City Council, and enforces office policies. Under the direction of City Council, gathers information, coordinates research, analyzes, and reports findings back to the whole body. Provides regular reports to the City Council on office activities and projects’ status. This position reports on a day-to-day basis to the City Council President and works in conjunction with the City Council President. Assists in drafting ordinances, resolutions, and other legislative documents as directed by council members. Assists with planning and organizing initiative and events for City Council Members. Acts as a liaison between the City Council, Mayor and City departments. Attends City council meetings, subcommittee meetings and community events on behalf of the City Council. Facilitates progress on City Council initiatives and any other tasks deemed necessary, as directed by the City Council leadership. Evening hours may be required to complete special projects or to attend public meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university required
  • Five (5) years of professional experience performing complex and comprehensive job functions related to the duties of this role, preferably in municipal or legislative settings.
  • Knowledge of municipal operations, processes and procedures and municipal organizations, methods, and practices, as well as knowledge of relevant state and federal regulations
  • Skill in use of Microsoft Office Programs Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other programs that are determined to be essential to the efficient and effective performance of the job
  • Ability to solve problems in a timely manner, managing own time and the time of staff
  • Ability to work effectively with City officials, employees and general public
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from citizens or regulatory agencies
  • Ability to produce written documents using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar and to understand oral and written instructions
  • Ability to analyze a variety of administrative problems and to make problem-solving recommendations
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret basic laws, rules and regulations affecting municipal government
  • Ability to effectively prepare, communicate, present and respond to executive management, public groups, boards, commissions and other branches of government
  • Ability to solve practical problems and handle changing situations

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish-Speaking proficiency strongly desired, though not mandatory
