About The Position

New Directions is a non-profit social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that provide supports in a variety of settings and foster people’s hopes and dreams in their communities. The organization’s mission is to provide responsive and individualized services that foster the hopes and dreams of people and their communities. Throughout the organization, staff and leadership work in many fields and in variety of shifts to deliver quality service and supports. Child Home Services (CHS) supports children and youth through a variety of programs. This support varies depending on their age, needs, and abilities. This may include re-connecting with family or loved ones, living on their own or moving to supported care. The Summer Mentor will serve as an official mentor and role model to the youth/children attending activities. The Mentor will engage with youth/children ages 7-21 as well as their families while carrying out various cultural, social, and recreational activities in small group or one on one settings in the community/outdoors. They will provide youth/children with social opportunities to skill build, meet friends and have fun.

Requirements

  • Must be under 30 years of age to qualify for the Canada Summer Jobs grant.
  • Post-secondary education (i.e., Indigenous studies, social work, psychology, counselling, etc.) is an asset (completed or in-progress).
  • Knowledge of Indigenous teachings, culture, and history including participating in cultural practices, programming, and ceremonies alongside participants.
  • Experience working with the Indigenous community.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset.
  • Creative and takes initiative.
  • Knowledgeable of Winnipeg community summer events, resources etc.
  • Experience facilitating group activities.
  • Experience working with youth and children.
  • Basic computer knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
  • Access to a safe, reliable vehicle for work purposes is considered an asset.
