The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is seeking a Community Health Services (CHS) Regional Director to serve as an extension of the CHS Chief Deputy Commissioner in providing leadership, oversight, strategic direction, and support for programs and public health services delivered across Virginia's health districts. This executive leadership role helps ensure the effective operation of district and regional public health functions and advances VDH's mission to protect and promote the health of all Virginians. This position is a multi-hire for 3 CHS Regional Directors in 3 separate regions. The regions are Central, Eastern, and Southwest. Central region includes the following Health Districts: Chesterfield, Crater, Chickahominy, Henrico, Piedmont, and Richmond. Eastern region includes the following Health Districts: Chesapeake, Eastern Shore, Hampton, Norfolk, Peninsula, Portsmouth, Three Rivers, Virginia Beach, and Western Tidewater. Southwest District includes the following Health Districts: Roanoke, Central Virginia, Cumberland Plateau, Lenowisco, Mount Rogers, New River, Pittsylvania, West Piedmont, and Southside. The CHS Regional Director provides direct supervision to physician and non-physician District Directors within the assigned region and reports directly to the CHS Chief Deputy Commissioner. In the absence of the CHS Chief Deputy Commissioner, the Regional Director may exercise certain authorities delegated by the VDH Commissioner. Working collaboratively with District Directors, other Regional Directors, and the CHS Chief Deputy Commissioner, the Regional Director identifies opportunities to improve and strengthen public health operations across districts and regions. This includes developing innovative approaches to share resources, personnel, and best practices while enhancing efficiency and service delivery. The Regional Director uses data to inform decisions and initiatives affecting regions and individual districts. This work includes supporting community, district, and regional health assessments and improvement planning; guiding education initiatives; informing program design and evaluation; ensuring the provision and quality assurance of patient care and clinical services; supporting environmental protection efforts; overseeing disease surveillance and outbreak investigations; and coordinating health-related activities with partner organizations. The Regional Director works closely with other Regional Directors to identify common challenges and successful practices across regions and provides direct feedback and recommendations to the CHS Chief Deputy Commissioner. The position also meets regularly with CHS Medical Officers to understand clinical operations and emerging challenges within and across districts and to identify opportunities for training, process improvements, and new initiatives. In districts without a physician District Director, and in collaboration with the CHS Medical Director and Medical Officers, the Regional Director may carry out certain prescribing duties, consult on district clinical operations, and provide physician-level expertise during situations such as outbreak investigations and disease prevention and control activities. Acting under delegated authority from the CHS Chief Deputy Commissioner and, where applicable, the VDH Commissioner, the Regional Director exercises professional judgment and provides leadership and guidance over the clinical, business, and human resources operations of the districts within the assigned region. This position requires current licensure to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
