About The Position

The Children's Librarian will be responsible for initiating, planning, and conducting a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by children and teens. This role also involves providing reference services, assisting with school programming, developing collections, and promoting collections through displays. The position requires flexibility to work various shifts, including afternoons, evenings, and some weekends.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or significant completion thereof
  • Professional and enthusiastic attitude towards providing public library service to patrons of all ages
  • Experience working with children ages 5-18
  • A desire to serve the public in a positive manner
  • Familiarity with popular reading materials and genre collections
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Familiarity with electronic databases and MeL resources
  • Ability to lift, push and/or pull at least 20 pounds
  • Flexibility to work varied hours

Responsibilities

  • Initiates, plans, and conducts a variety of programs and activities to encourage the use of the library by children and teens
  • Provide quick and accurate reference services for patrons of all ages & abilities
  • Assisting the School Outreach Coordinator, help with off-site and on-site school programming for all ages.
  • Responsible for development of assigned collections
  • Promotion of collections through creation of displays
  • Must be available to work afternoon, evening, and some weekend shifts
  • Perform other library duties as assigned
