About The Position

The City of Puyallup is accepting applications for a Librarian I - Children's Services position. The position is anticipated to start October 19th. The successful candidate will perform a variety of professional library services in conjunction with selection, maintenance and circulation of library materials to meet the educational, recreational, and informational needs of the community. Incumbents work as part of a team to provide in-depth reference services to library customers in person, by telephone, or email, and promote library services to the community through education and outreach to schools and community organizations. The City of Puyallup is a community of 44,000 and is situated at the foot of scenic Mount Rainier. Requirements

Master of Library Science Degree from an American Library Association accredited school of librarianship and Washington State certification as a librarian.
Training, experience, or study in the area(s) of library IT, young adult, children's, and/or reference librarianship.
Possession of or the ability to obtain, and maintain throughout employment, a valid Washington State driver's license.
A wide variety of reference sources, popular culture, authors, literature, publishers and publications.
Knowledge and support of the principles of intellectual freedom.
Dewey decimal system of classification and Library of Congress subject headings.
Search strategies used for retrieving information from electronic databases.
Work a varied schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Read, write, speak and understand the English language.
Clearly, succinctly, and effectively communicate ideas and thoughts both verbally and in writing.
Work effectively, with a teamwork orientation, in daily activities as well as addressing problems and unique situations.
Operate with a minimum of supervision and work collaboratively in a team environment to find solutions to problems.
Use independent judgment and make good decisions when resolving problems relating to employees and customers/public.
Recognize and set priorities, and to plan, coordinate and organize own work.
Set priorities and to use initiative and independent judgment in a wide variety of situations is required.
Learn the operation and use of an automated circulation system and bibliographic data base searching techniques using computer data base.

Listen to, understand, and interpret the concerns of library users.
Establish and maintain good customer relations.

Responsibilities

Plans, organizes, implements, coordinates, monitors, and assesses new and existing services and programs of the library, based on community needs.
Assists patrons in the use of library collections through reference interviews, database and web searches, reader's advisory, and provides instruction in the use of computer software to locate requested materials.
Uses library management tools to analyze, research, plan and implement systems and routines to increase efficiency and lower programmatic costs.
Evaluates, weeds, and develops collection.
Submits monthly reports and aids, as needed, in the preparation of the annual budget and report.
Participates in the development of displays and marketing of the library's collection, services and programs, in order to increase use.
Maintains current knowledge of materials, resources, and services of the library and refers patrons as required.
Evaluates collections, allocates and controls materials budget as assigned.
Develops web page content and links.
Establishes community liaisons with appropriate agencies and organizations in order to promote library services and facilitate programming and service delivery.
Maintains print and electronic collections, files, and indexes as assigned, including weeding, selection, and ongoing maintenance.
Provides a variety of programs for all ages.
Participates in professional organizations and activities to keep informed of current and emerging trends in public libraries.
Plans, performs and promotes storytimes.
Plans, schedules, and arranges publicity and presents booktalks, book discussions, and programs developed for children.
May select materials for children to provide relevant collections based on knowledge of community.
