About The Position

Within this role the candidate will promote ACPL’s values and mission while following established policies and procedures. The purpose of this position is to serve the informational, reference and reading needs of library patrons of all ages at ACPL and will be expected to perform any and all routine tasks necessary to the operation of the library system. This position works under the supervision of the Community Engagement Librarian. This position is a full-time, 40 hours per week, benefitted position. While most hours are Monday – Friday, frequent monthly weekend or evening hours are required. This position will be scheduled to work at other library branches throughout Alamance County on a regular basis. The best candidate will possess a strong commitment to provide customer-focused service for a positive library experience and to relate tactfully and courteously with a wide range of diverse patrons and community members.

Requirements

  • Master of Library and Information Science or Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of library experience working in a children’s programming role is required
  • Three (3) years’ experience working with children and customer service is required.
  • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to provide respectful, equitable assistance to patrons of all backgrounds.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, internet searching, and social media platforms.
  • Ability to learn and apply library-specific technology, including ILS systems and electronic resources.
  • Creativity in program planning, display design, and patron engagement.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, sound judgment, and accountability.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods; bend, reach, squat, and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to push/pull loaded book carts and access materials on high and low shelves.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patrons and staff in a busy environment

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with diverse populations in community-facing roles strongly preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Planning, promoting, and presenting programming for children ages 0 to 18 at partner/outreach locations or in partnership with branches, upon request
  • Coordinate the Children’s team to plan system-wide, age-appropriate learning programming, primarily Summer Reading
  • Responsible for monthly purchasing of all youth materials in coordination with the Collection Development Librarian
  • Assist, cultivate and maintain partnerships with local schools, childcare providers and other youth related organizations to promote reading and digital literacy
  • Assist with the library’s community engagement efforts
  • Identify library & literacy outreach opportunities and stay informed of activities and services for children and families within the community
  • Increase skills and knowledge through professional reading workshops and webinars
  • Regular public service duties include staffing all service desks
  • Troubleshoot minor technology related issues, keeping management aware of issues
