About The Position

The Chief Operating Officer is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for overseeing the organization’s programs and services to ensure alignment with its mission, strategic goals, and commitment to high-quality outcomes. This role leads cross-functional operations (statewide), drives strategic initiatives, and fosters a positive workplace culture for all staff and consumers. This position reports directly to the CEO and may serve as acting CEO in their absence, ensuring continuity of leadership and operations.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree (M.A. or M.S.) required.
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience, including executive-level oversight.
  • Licensure preferred; LCSW or LPC
  • Proven success in managing complex programs and cross-functional teams across a large geographic footprint.
  • Extensive understanding of trauma-informed care, nonprofit service delivery with the social services array including behavioral health and child welfare.
  • While performing the duties of this job, this person is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.
  • They are frequently required to sit.
  • They are occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
  • While performing the duties of this job, they are expected to maintain composure, professionalism, make sound judgements, and ethical decisions in a variety of situations including stressful and mentally challenging situations.
  • They must have reliable transportation and the capability to travel and report to all worksites.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic & Operational Leadership Lead the execution of strategic initiatives, including performance oversight and budget management, and deployment of our strategic plan.
  • Provide program updates to the board both verbally and written on a continual basis.
  • Translate the CEO’s vision into actionable plans across all departments and programs.
  • Exceptional leadership, shared decision-making, and empowering staff at every level.
  • Champion a culture of transparency, continuous learning, and staff wellness.
  • Collaborate with leadership teams to set organizational goals and monitor progress.
  • Program Oversight & Quality Supervise program directors and ensure services are mission-aligned and outcome-driven.
  • Oversee program evaluations, licensing, and accreditation compliance.
  • Play a key role in expanding our trauma-informed care model and strengthening partnerships with schools, courts, and community agencies.
  • Lead preparations for site visits by state regulators, grant funders and the Council on Accreditation.
  • Provide financial acumen and expertise related to program budgets, oversee and monitor budgets and collaborate with the CFO and CEO to ensure fiscal goals are met or exceeded per fiscal year.
  • Partner with internal quality improvement teams to drive employee-led enhancements.
  • Ensure outcomes are monitored and met as it relates to each funding source.
  • Utilize data measures and key performance indicators to support and celebrate exceptional services and employee engagement.

  • Support hiring, training, performance management, and professional development of program leaders.
  • External Relations & Collaboration Maintain strong relationships with referral sources, funders, and community partners.
  • Represent the organization in fundraising, public relations, and external engagements as needed.
  • Work closely with finance, human resources, information technology, quality assurance, facilities and development to ensure operational excellence.
  • Supervisory Scope Directly manages Directors, Senior Directors, and/or Vice Presidents overseeing service programs.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, evaluating, and developing leadership staff.
  • Ensures compliance with organizational policies and employment laws.
