Chief of Staff - Operations

Tachyon Industrial, ImcRedwood City, CA
Onsite

About The Position

Tachyon Industrial is building a High Energy Physics Prime, the first venture-scale industrial accelerator company. We are focused on designing, manufacturing, and operating the next generation of particle accelerator infrastructure. Initially, these accelerators will be used for testing electronics, and eventually for producing antimatter for propulsion systems to enable space exploration. We are looking for a generalist operations person to help establish the physical labs and facilities Tachyon will require over the next two years, and to manage all other operational aspects. This role is broad, encompassing everything from coordinating buildouts with contractors and landlords to managing procurement and vendor logistics for lab equipment, and ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the office and lab. This is not a narrow facilities or office-management role; we need someone who embraces "whatever needs to get done" as their primary responsibility, capable of handling high-stakes facilities planning and mundane logistics seamlessly.

Requirements

  • A track record of high competence in operations, facilities, office management, or a comparable generalist role.
  • High agency: ability to identify needs and take action without direct instruction.
  • Creativity under constraint: ability to find solutions within budget and timeline limitations.
  • Ambition: desire for ownership over the company's physical operations.
  • A collaborative style: ability to work effectively with others and act as a connective tissue between the technical team and external parties.
  • Courage paired with judgment: comfort making decisions and owning outcomes, with the ability to escalate when necessary.
  • Operates with real urgency: bias towards fast, working solutions.
  • Willingness to perform any task, regardless of perceived glamour or complexity, if it needs to be done.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience standing up lab or technical facility space (wet lab, hardware lab, manufacturing, or similar).
  • Experience with procurement and vendor management for technical/scientific equipment.
  • Exposure to EHS, safety, or regulatory compliance (training will be provided for the specific radiological and RF environment).

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and buildout of lab and facility space as Tachyon scales over the next two years, working with landlords, contractors, and vendors on space, power, HVAC, and other infrastructure needs.
  • Stand up the operational backbone of a physical hardware lab: procurement, equipment receiving/logistics, inventory, shipping/receiving for components and machine parts.
  • Own day-to-day office and lab operations: managing supplies, the fridge, scheduling, vendor relationships, and addressing any issues that arise.
  • Identify operational gaps before they become problems and proactively address them.
  • Support the team across various functional areas, including HR/people-ops basics, vendor contracts, and logistics for events or lab visits.
  • Build the operational systems and processes that enable a small, fast-moving technical team to focus on their technical work.

Benefits

  • High ownership
  • High variety in tasks
  • Opportunity to make a significant impact on the company's physical infrastructure and operations
  • Be part of a quest for a more exciting future
