About The Position

The Chief Nursing Officer provides strategic leadership as the senior executive position responsible for all nursing and other designated patient care functions and services within the hospital organization. The role assumes responsibility for assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating nursing practice on a facility level. The role assumes 24/7 responsibility and has accountability to ensure high quality, safe, and appropriate nursing care, competency of clinical staff, and appropriate resource management related to patient care. The Chief Nursing Officer represents nursing concerns on the governing board and at medical staff leadership meetings.

Requirements

  • Active and current registered nurse license in the state of residence/practice.
  • An academic degree in nursing.
  • Current BLS (AHA) certificate and maintain current.
  • At least five years of progressive management experience in a facility environment, as a Nursing Director of multiple, complex nursing departments.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of previous leadership or administrative experience.
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven leadership ability and facility operational expertise.
  • Ability to serve as a role model and advocate for the professional discipline of nursing.
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently organize patient care promoting optimal outcomes, patient safety, and patient, physician, and employee satisfaction.
  • Proven success recruiting, retaining, and developing staff.
  • Effectiveness in mentoring and developing staff, encouraging professional growth and achievement.
  • Must possess knowledge of CMS rules and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree in nursing or related field (Health Administration, Business, Public Health, or Management) is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic leadership for all nursing and designated patient care functions and services within the hospital organization.
  • Assesses, plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates nursing practice on a facility level.
  • Ensures high quality, safe, and appropriate nursing care.
  • Ensures competency of clinical staff.
  • Manages resources related to patient care.
  • Represents nursing concerns on the governing board and at medical staff leadership meetings.
  • Takes the lead in complying with regulatory standards, rules, and laws.
  • Responsible for planning, administration, and monitoring of consistent readiness of all quality management, regulatory requirements, and quality improvement processes.
  • Ensures regulatory compliance, including knowledge of legal obligations and nursing best practices.
  • Organizes time and divides it among competing priorities effectively.
  • Acts as the closest link between physicians, nurses, and hospital administrators.
  • Determines the types and numbers of nursing personnel and staff necessary to provide nursing care for all areas of the hospital.
  • Participates with leadership in planning, promoting, and conducting performance improvement activities.
  • Manages assigned departments.
  • Participates in administrative decision-making, long-range planning activities, risk management, quality assurance, and patient experience.
  • Monitors and implements new laws, rules, and regulations that impact hospital/clinic service delivery.
