About The Position

Valley Health is seeking a Chief Nursing Information Officer (CNIO) and Senior Director, Nursing Informatics for their Winchester, VA location. This executive leadership role is responsible for driving nursing digital transformation across the health system. The CNIO reports to the Chief Medical Information Officer, with a dotted-line relationship to the Chief Nursing Executive. The primary accountability is translating frontline nursing practice and clinical operations into safe, efficient, and scalable digital workflows. The CNIO will lead nursing informatics strategy and execution, ensuring alignment between clinical care delivery and enterprise technology to enhance patient safety, quality, and operational efficiency. The CNIO is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and collaborates across nursing, medical, operational, and IT leadership. Success in this role is measured by demonstrable improvements in nursing workflows, experience, safety, and outcomes. The CNIO will represent nursing practice in enterprise governance structures and act as the authoritative voice on technology's impact on clinical workflows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience required.
  • Active RN licensure required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in nursing, informatics, healthcare administration, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Experience in clinical informatics, workflow design, or performance improvement preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Defining and governing nursing informatics standards across the continuum of care
  • Ensuring alignment of systems with professional nursing practice
  • Leading implementation, evaluation, and continuous optimization of clinical systems
  • Partnering with clinical decision support and IT teams to advance evidence-based care
  • Accountable for how emerging technologies (AI, automation, virtual nursing) impact nursing workflows and patient care
  • Evaluating and guiding the integration of new technologies for safe, effective, and scalable adoption
  • Ensuring nursing-facing data, analytics, and reporting are integrated into workflows and decision-making
  • Advancing nursing metrics, dashboards, and reporting
  • Aligning analytics with operational and quality priorities
  • Promoting the effective use of clinical business intelligence
  • Providing strategic leadership for nursing education and training related to digital workflows and tools
  • Driving adoption of standardized workflows
  • Leading clinical transformation tied to technology implementation
  • Reducing documentation burden and supporting workforce sustainability
  • Engaging frontline staff, educators, and leaders in change efforts
  • Partnering with nursing leadership and professional governance structures to support shared decision-making, nursing excellence, and Magnet principles through optimized digital workflows
  • Advising on adoption and scaling of clinical technologies
  • Supporting interdisciplinary performance improvement
  • Representing nursing informatics best practices internally and externally
  • Aligning technology initiatives with clinical and operational priorities
  • Leading Epic-based nursing workflows, documentation standards, and optimization efforts, with decision-making authority over nursing-facing configuration, design standards, prioritization, and adoption.
