About The Position

The Charge Nurse assumes responsibility for the day-to-day management and operations of the assigned nursing unit, including patient safety, patient throughput, and caregiver safety and accountability. The permanent charge nurse supervises and directs nursing-unit activities, coordinates assignments, collaborates with physicians and internal and external entities to deliver safe patient care, and provides patient care using the nursing process. The position may require floating to other units, although this should be the exception rather than the rule. Population-specific competencies are required, and the nurse adheres to applicable National Patient Safety Goals based on the level of patient contact. The Charge Nurse reports to the appropriate supervisor, manager, or director. The position may have additional or varied physical-demand and respiratory fit-test requirements. There is potential exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, and chemicals; standard precautions must be followed.
