About The Position

Tufts Medical Center (TMC) and the Tufts University School of Medicine are seeking an academic physician executive to serve as the Chair of Dermatology. The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader with a reputation for outstanding clinical practice, teaching, innovation, and academic excellence. This role requires strong organizational and management skills to lead a department within a major quaternary medical center. The Chair will report to the Dean of the Medical School/Chief Academic Officer, President of the Physician Organization, and the Chief Operating Officer of Tufts Medicine Health System. The position involves oversight of all academic programs, including appointments and promotions, and a commitment to sustaining clinical excellence, innovation, and teaching. The Chair will play a key role in advancing new treatments, recruiting faculty, and contributing to the growth of the department's clinical trials program. They will also be instrumental in establishing effective strategies for clinical performance and high-value services in the evolving healthcare landscape. The Chair must be an exemplary clinician, educator, and scholar, with demonstrated administrative and management experience in an academic healthcare setting, and a passion for leading change.

Requirements

  • M.D. or M.D./Ph.D.
  • American Board of Dermatology certification.
  • Rank of Professor or Associate Professor at a minimum.
  • Proven scholarly accomplishments and recognition in a dermatology discipline as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national level.
  • Medical dermatology is the preferred subspecialty.
  • Academic portfolio including research and/or education at the UME and GME levels.
  • Clinical research and clinical trial experience are required.
  • A substantial record of publications.
  • Management experience (e.g., Program Director, Division Director).
  • Ambition, inspiration, and experience to build the practice infrastructure so that physician effectiveness and patient experience is satisfying and rewarding and the patient experience exceeds expectations.
  • Significant experience with the business side of practice.
  • Personal charisma, presence and interpersonal skills.
  • Experienced communicator accustomed to utilizing influence rather than authority over multiple interdependencies.
  • Distinguished academic career in which teaching has been a priority.
  • Experience building a program or division elsewhere and understands the challenges and the rewards.
  • Leadership in representing TMC dermatology with affiliates and new partners of TMC.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight for all academic programs and processes, including academic appointments and promotions.
  • Contribute to establishing effective new ways to achieve outstanding clinical performance and high-value clinical services.
  • Advance the institution's mission to contribute to advancing new and innovative treatments.
  • Recruit faculty who are committed to clinical care, teaching, and academic rigor.
  • Ensure the dermatology training program continues its reputation for excellence for residents and medical students.
  • Provide a superb environment for faculty teaching and clinical practice.
  • Ensure access to all referring physicians and departments at the Medical Center and outside referring physicians.
  • Develop innovations in the business of dermatology care in relation to the Department of Dermatology’s access requirements and relationships to referral sources.
  • Assume an important role within the affiliated health systems in organizing optimal dermatology care from TMC’s affiliates throughout the region.
  • Provide leadership for the academic mission of the Department of Dermatology, which involves several other Tufts-affiliated teaching hospitals across the region.
  • Recruit additional faculty to meet clinical requirements, support teaching, and enhance staff satisfaction.
  • Assess strengths and gaps in the Department across clinical, academic, educational, and service realms.
  • Collaborate with the Hospital CEO, CEO of the Physicians Organization, and the Dean to identify and address top priorities.
  • Demonstrate excellent achievement in education and clinical trials.
  • Execute a plan to improve patient access from referring physicians.
  • Recruit and attract new dermatology faculty members.
  • Provide a professionally rewarding experience for faculty.
  • Expand the scope of Department services consistent with the vision of the Chair and referring physicians.
  • Determine what is important to referring physicians and develop an action plan with the faculty to address those priorities.

Benefits

  • Compensation is $636,130.00-$748,453.00 annually.
