About The Position

The Certified Surgical Technologist supports perioperative care, maintains sterile technique, assists surgical teams, and helps ensure quality patient outcomes. The role works with patients of all ages and coordinates with clinicians and other staff to support continuity of care. The position is full time at Carilion Clinic’s Roanoke facility, with variable hours.

Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent.
Successfully complete an accredited surgical technologist training program and hold a current Certified Surgical Technologist credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor; alternatively, successfully complete a surgical technology training program while serving in a branch of the U.S. armed forces.
Surgical Technology certification required.
LPN licensure required for grandfathered employees.
Obtain and/or maintain registration with the Virginia Department of Health Professions.
Knowledge of instrumentation.
Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to provide age-appropriate care, including knowledge of growth and development throughout the life span and the ability to identify patients’ age-related and specific needs and provide care as described in departmental policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Establish and maintain a sterile field and ensure the team maintains a sterile environment.
Correctly and safely pass instruments to the clinician.
Participate in surgical counts of sponges, needles, and instruments according to policy.
Communicate with surgeons, gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, other necessary staff, and patients to facilitate continuity of care.
Follow policies, procedures, regulatory standards, and patient safety goals.
Participate in the nursing process for patients of all ages served.
Participate in unit educational activities.
