The Certified Peer Specialist, also described as a Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS), assists clients in articulating personal recovery goals, identifying reasonable and holistic steps toward recovery, and recognizing barriers to those goals. The specialist helps individuals identify strengths in daily living and recovery skills and teaches problem-solving, ways to identify and combat negative self-talk, social-support building, and self-advocacy. The PRS intervenes, coordinates, and connects clients to care as directed by the clinical team. The role also includes completing screens, assessments, and evidence-based protocols as trained and supported by Centerstone. The position requires lived experience receiving mental health, substance use, or gambling treatment, and the specialist must be willing to share their recovery story to help others.
