The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) serves as a caregiver to assisted living residents during scheduled work periods, providing resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under a charge nurse’s supervision. The role supports residents’ physical and psychological needs in accordance with their care or service plans. Duties include assistance with personal care and activities of daily living; obtaining and recording vital signs; supporting transfers, repositioning, walking, and exercises where applicable; helping with food preparation and meals; and providing psychosocial support. Depending on the location and applicable scope of practice, the CNA may assist nursing staff with procedures, collect non-invasive specimens, administer medications delegated by a licensed nurse, provide housekeeping and laundry services, and support wellness and recreational programs. The CNA documents care outcomes and communicates changes in residents’ conditions and care concerns to the charge nurse. The CNA follows infection prevention and control policies and uses personal protective equipment. The nursing department provides care around the clock, and this position requires rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Shift assignments vary according to the nursing area, location, staffing, and resident census. Committee meeting attendance may sometimes be expected, and employees may be asked to provide direction to students when they are caring for residents as part of their training.
